Strap problem

I tried installing a strap on my winch recently and had a problem. The bolt to hold the strap in place was 1/4", and as the strap tightened up...the bolt broke.

Do I need to use a stronger bolt? Or can I just wrap the strap around the drum a few times to get it to hold?

It seems like a lot of shear stress to have on the bolt when the strap is tight.

Thanks a bunch!

Re: Strap problem

the bolt is suppose to be in a slot, and should move next to the drum. yes, i have done what you are mentioning. it just has to be a very tight wrap, and don't extend the strap more than 3/4 of it's length.

Re: Strap problem

Go to Napa and get a Grade 8 bolt. They have a much higher shear strength.

Re: Strap problem

Thanks for the help. The drum I have is set up to use rope it seems; no slot for the bolt to fit next to the drum.

I think I will just replace the rope with some new high-strenth rope.

Thanks again.

Re: Strap problem

The title of your post says strap problem and now you tell us you are using rope. The bolt should pass through both sides of the winch hub and the rope attached to it. Why not use the proper strap? There is a loop at the end of the strap for the bolt to pass through.

Re: Strap problem

The winch originally had rope on it, but I thought I would change to a strap for more strength.

The holes which pass through both sides of the drum are about 1" from the center of the spool. So that put all the stress on the holding bolt.

Would you suggest getting a stronger bolt, grade 8, or just replacing with a strong rope?
