It really makes me feel old that there are people retired who weren't even born on D-Day.

It makes me sad that so few remember it at all. It was the major turning point in the European Theater of Operations.

Many brave young Americans died that day. Please honor their memory.

I'm sure not a whisper about it in our publicly funded schools but I am doing my part. I got out that episode, from my Victory at Sea tape collection, and watched it today.

The folks that served in and survived WWII are dieing off at a fast rate these days. Alot of them can't even remember their names much less. :(

They are really the greatest generation i've lived amongst in my lifetime for sure.

64 years ago the first step was taken on a journey that ended for me with my father being liberated from Buchenwald.
No I will never forget that day, because it was the beginning of new hope for my family.

 I guess i will take back that hippie comment JB...Life is getting a bit large for me know...and i attack quickly. My family started in the US and my grandfather would probably knock me out for being so arrogant to people's opinoin's...Indeed we should all be humbled, from the sacrafice's so many made. in a different but defineing time for the world.

My Dad who passed away 2 years ago at the age of 87 was one of the first Americans to enter and liberate several of the camps towards the end of the war. He never spoke much about it. When I learned from him the name of his division and a few inportant dates with alot of internet searching I was able to retrace much of where he was. Darn right Im proud of him and the ones that served.

Honoring their memory should be mandatory for every person living free today from the results of their actions. That said..............

That was then JB, this is now. Sad as it is, what took place then is irreverent in the minds of todays world. The connection between D-Day and todays society is long gone. The concepts, values and convictions utilized to defeat the enemy then no longer exist. Not from what I've seen any way :confused::(:(

Yep, my granddad on one side passed away last year, and on the other side a few years back, both served, one in the army, where he carried in a duffle bag some tomato seeds back to the states from Germany, and they are to tomatos what walla-walla is to onions...

The other served silently in the manhattan project... although a few years before he passed on, he also passed on some of the stories about where he worked and what he did. Neat stuff.

I honor it everyday, JB. My dad was a 2nd Lt in the 82nd Airborne and was a Pathfinder. Along with the rest of the Pathfinders, he jumped the night before the invasion. On the wall of my office is a framed certificate commemorating his service and making reference to the "brick" that I bought him at the National D-Day Museum in New Orleans. Over that certificate is his photo.

Dad was a Radioman serving on a PT Boat in the south Pacific. He didn't talk much about the war, but he instilled in me and my siblings a respect for flag and country that carried me through my own tour of duty and remains strong today. Without being too political, I have questioned and disagreed with our leaders at various times, but I firmly believe in the American spirit and that we will eventually overcome the problems that face us today. God bless the "greatest generation" for setting the example we should all strive for. :):)

Re: 64 years ago. . . .

five of my uncles were in the army in ww11
two were in on the europeon invasion ,and a couple were in on the island hopping in the pacfic .they were strong /cold .almost brutal in there judgement and in the ways they tought me,
but when i got older i understood ,joined the service served and do not regret it a bit ,the world war 2 veterans were some of the most loyal
and deadly /yet compassionate men to ever serve .
they will always be rembered by me and i hope that i can live to
be as brave honest and loyal as them
[salute] to the soldiers that stormed that beach
its not easy being the third wave in knowing you will probaly die
although i have served in combat and knew there was always the risk
im still amazed at the ones that charged the beaches those days .
faceing pretty much certain death ,and for the ones that survived
they lost most of there friends ,in 24 hrs
we lost personel in combat . it hurts even if you are not close
but the mass casualites that day must have been unreal to have to deal with
regards Bennyb

Re: 64 years ago. . . .

I actually have the book D-Day by your Stephen Ambrose.

Yes I have seen the movie, and watched the documentaries, but the book seems to have a bigger impact....there is no main character nor does it cover just one isolated event.
Must have read it 3 times over the past 20yrs....got to the point in life where I have to focus on other things as i found looking back was making me morbid (think that's the word), (found I was getting worse as i got older),so I won't give the book away...I just won't read it.
I havn't become blaise or anything, as I am a Viet Vet myself.

So back to D-Day...thank god I wasn't about then, and I am very thankful for what the sacrifice gave me.

Cheers
Phillip

PS I am about to complete another book by Ambrose....then I will be able to tell you all about your history....

They may be gone, but they are not forgotten JB.

It is scary to live in Germany as a American, and see how the new generation here is rewriting history. Back to the past, so to say, if you catch my drift.

To those who say go on with life: "Forget the past and you are doomed to repeat it".

P.S. Hope the last parts aren't too political. If it was, I'll apologize in advance for those that might get upset at my statement.
