Looking for “Yellow Jacket” boat owners ...

I grew up in the small town where these boats were made, and always wanted to restore one just for fun. A future project.

Are there any Yellow Jacket owners out there in iboat land?

What have your experiences been?

How hard are they to find nowadays?

Is there a way to see how many boats of a certain manufacture are registered in the States, as is the case with autos?

OH NO!

That is not my (I wish) boat, those are just some of the photos I have found over they last several years of researching.

It is really great to know that once again iboat forum members are so good at tracking this stuff down. I just posted the question and you already found one. You guys (and gals) are really a super bunch. :D

I am in Germany right now, so this project is on hold. I am trying to decide if this is something to pursue when we return. I want to do a wooden boat.

I have been watching the Internet hoping for a deal, to good to be true. Thought I might buy it, and then get someone in the family to go get it for me, and keep it in their garage till I come home.

$4800 is out of my budget and sounds like someone already fixed this one up. Beside that I don't think my brother would drive from Florida, to Nebraska to get it, and then to Texas to put it in the garage, and then back to Florida. He loves me, but not that much!

Although I do have a friend in Nebraska, I could ...

Hum? No,No, forget I said that.

If you want to see what I am working on now, look here: http://mobillity.blogspot.com/

I just updated it with new project photos from this morning.

P.S: that COBALT 222 on the same page looks like it might be ...

Do you like Yellow Jacket boats because you are a Roy Rogers fan?
(Roy Rogers was part owner of the Yellow Jacket Company).

Actually I do like to hear a little Roy Rogers every once and a while. But that came on by surprise as the years have added up on me. I have to listen in secret, so I guess I am a closet fan.

Until I started my research, I didn't know the company ever belonged to him.

I grew up in the town where they were made, and in High School a friend worked in the old factory, making cabinetry. They still had the same tools, all kinds of boating stuff laying around & hanging from the rafters. Outside the shop were stacks of never finished hulls.

As the years go by my interest in restoring one grows.

this may be as close as you get. http://www.boatdesigns.com/departments.asp?dept=2

i do remember seeing one years ago, how cool it was.

Hey T-Daddy! :D

Thats a fine looking “Barrelback”, but I am afraid it is probably a number to big for one of my next projects. It is although where I would like to be someday.

Other than some restoration work with a friend 30+ years ago, I just don't have the skills yet to take on a wood boot project that big, from scratch. I did plan to build a Glen-L Hydrofoil as one of the next projects though. It is small enough I can do it where we live now.

Hey ST, Here's some info on the Yellow Jacket boats, I think Richard Cole who designed the Wellcraft Airslot also had a hand in designing these:
http://www.hsmarine.com/WellCraftAirslots/YellowJacketBoats/RichardColeYellowJackets.htm

Thanks MikDee, I haven't seen this link before! :)

It has most of the information I have found up to now, with a few new leads and details to the story. Little by little things come together. :D

Years ago one of the old carpenters that worked for Yellow Jacket was still around and I always meant to call him up to ask a few questions about the early days. I tried last time I was home, and he had past away. :(
