New Alarm Horn

Hi All, 1996 Johnson 130 Looper. VRO disabled. Engine has run great since I bought it 2 years ago. Coming up to the boat ramp the other day I heard a horn alarm, like an overheat or a VRO alarm. I trailered the boat but wasn't able to investigate due to moving. Well last night I went to the boat and as soon as I turn the Key, the alarm goes off, and it is coming from the ignition switch. Assuming that it was not an overheating alarm at this point, I started it on the muffs, good pee stream (he he, he said pee stream). I only let it run for a minute or two and then shut it down.

Could this be related to my VRO pump, or is it and ignition switch problem? All accesories off of my fuse panel are working fine so I have good power to the ignition switch. I looked for loose wires off the switch and could find none.

Thanks so much guys.

Re: New Alarm Horn

Turning the key on, engine not running, horn sounding......... At this point, remove the TAN wire from the horn. If the horn continues to sound, replace the horn.

If, when removing the TAN wire, the horn stops sounding, that usually indicates that one of the sensors at the engine is at fault.

Hi Joe, thanks for the reply...

When you say horn, you just mean the back of my ignition switch assembly correct? Because I don't have a seperate horn. Sorry if that is a stupid question.

You mean one of the ignition sensors correct?

Thanks again!

I just noticed that your engine is a 1996 model. I was thinking of the earlier models that have a seperate horn, sorry. I retired some years before your engine was manufactured and am not familiar with its design. From what you've just said, the horn is part of the ignition switch?

I'll let someone else jump in here who is familiar with that circuitry.

Thanks Joe, yes, I have no seperate horn. Should I not do the Tan wire test then? Thanks again, much, much appreciated.

If the horn is indeed part of that switch, and if that TAN wire you speak of leads to the overheat sensors at the engine, then yes I'd try that tan wire test. I'd be interested in seeing some pictures/diagrams of that switch either here or via email.

Re: New Alarm Horn

Ok, went to the boat, here are some pics. I disconnected the Tan wire and nothing changed, horn still going off. However, if you look at the second picture, that seemed to be the one that is loose. I only had time to jiggle it if you will, and the alarm stopped. So I think that may be the wire, I will fix this evening. Does anyone know what that wire is, and if it is for my oil VRO alarm, should I just disconnect it?

Thanks a million Joe.
