I'm going to be looking at a non-running 1990 starcraft 171 select this weekend. Beautiful boat - no scratches, interior is awesome, engine looks cared for, not even any rash on the trailer. New batteries, SS prop, all electrics work.
The owner said the motor wouldn't start this year and he needs it gone - lost storage and moving into an apartment. He's letting it go for a good price and in talking to him on the phone seems like a honest guy trying to move it quickly.
What should I look for on the OMC 4.3 for typical non-start issues? I figured I'd need to do a compression test, hand-spin the prop to check shifting, check for water in the oil, check for spark and fuel, but not sure what else. I'll be going through the rest of the boat with a comb to be sure it's in good shape.
I want to see if I can find the non-start issue before I buy it and get it to run, or at least identify the issue and determine whether it's worth it or not.
Are there any common issues?
Oops, just noticed there's an engine-related issues forum. Sorry for the mis-post! Mods should move it if it needs moving.
