I have a 64 90hp Starflite 90 S. Motor runs good but will not run at a proper speed. It will run wide open but only moves like the throttle is at about half. Also when throttle lever is pushed forward all the way it will stick and not throttle down, I have to pull th lid and throttle it down by hand. I have no idea how to fix either problem and would really apreciate any help anyone may have. Just bought the boat and motor and still learning, so please help if you can. Thanks

Re: 1964 Starflite 90 S

Sounds like you have a broken throttle cable.
That would account for not being able to pull it back, and possibly for not getting full throttle.
Another cause of not getting full speed could be it isn't running on all four cylinders. You need a manual.

Check compression
Check for 1/4" spark on all 4 cylinders.
Don't tear into that carburetor unless you have to. The kit is obsolete and costs several hundred$ if you find one. You can remove and inspect the high speed orfices without tearing it apart. But if you find them all gummed up, well....

Thanks F_R will do that, can you tell me how to check the high speed orfices, like I said I'm new to all of this. And can you tell me where would be the best place to find a manual for this motor? Thanks again!

The jets are deep in the holes behind the 4 slotted hex-head plugs. You are supposed to use a special screwdriver to get them out without buggering them up. They must be absolutely clean. The hole (orfice) through them is precision and must not be altered.

Picture shows the business end of the special screwdriver

Would you happen to have a picture or diagram of exactly what I'm looking for? Do I need to remove the carb? Sorry to be a pain but I really don't want to screw anything up.

I usually (carefully) clean those jets with a piece of single strand wire if the solvent doesn't clean them completely.

Ok thanks I know what you are talking about now, is it the same on the motor I have it only has a single 4 barrel carb?

Re: 1964 Starflite 90 S

Thanks again I just pulled the four bolts and drained the fuel from the float bowls, the fuel out of two of the bowls were dirty. Can I replace the high speed orfice jets or will they hard to find? Where can I find the tool to remove them, any auto parts store or marine shop? Thank you again for all your help I'm sure you saved me a bunch of money. Will let you know if it work if I can get the boat back in the water next weekend.

Thanks for the pic and the link both were helpful. One more question, what is the best to clean the jets, is there something I can buy at an auto parts store or marine shop to soak them in or...?

Re: 1964 Starflite 90 S

Thanks guys for all your help, I have done everything that was suggested, one more question though, I removed the round slotted screws fron the back of the float bowls and found the o-rings were all bad and were partialy plugging the hoe holes on the screws and the fuel rail, could that also be part of the problem? I am cleaning them now but was just wondering, the more I can learn the better. Thanks again you guys were a great help.

Re: 1964 Starflite 90 S

You need to make a decision. Do you want to fix this motor? If you do, you are going to have to bite the bullet and take that carburetor completely apart and clean it. In all probability you will need a kit to put it back together. Or at the very minimum, all the gaskets and seals. As I mentioned way up above, they are very expensive, IF you can even find one. http://www.sea-way.com/index.htm is a good place to start looking. You can view a similar carburetor for a 1968 100hp at http://shop.evinrude.com/ Their list only goes back to 1968. The carbs are similar, but don't count on everything being exactly the same.

The floats are difficult to adjust without the special tool. Even with the tool, they are finicky.

If you plan to fix this thing, a service manual is almost a must. You can probably get that here at iboats.

Re: 1964 Starflite 90 S

Hey guys thanks for the help again, I have gotten everything clean and took the boat out this weekend, and it ran a lot better and faster, but it doesn't have the pick up that it should, it takes awhile to get up to speed but it will run after awhile, any ideas why this might be? I waould also like to check and make sure that I am useing the right fuel/oil mixture, I am mixing at 50:1 is this correct?
