Quick questions on a an 89 gt150, J150STLACA.

the run down:

she gets up to rpm, 5800 ish. seems she could have more thou, running a 19ft checkmate. 14 1/2 19p alum prop. moving to a 14 3/4 20p stainless, good bad idea?.

fresh plugs, filters, vro, water pump, carb rebuild.

first time out with boat, idled at dock, noticed an arcing/sparking noise. no wires jumping spark. do the power packs make an arcing noise?

also, after 30 min ride, she idle's no more. could the lose of idle and arcing noise be an indication of a bad power pack? seems like she should have som more umph to her.

is it normal to hear an arcing noise at idle?

Also, brp catalog says power pack 583816 or 583865, which one for the model number?

thank you for your time, be safe out there.

Re: Johnson gt150 power pack questions.

Could be an actual coil that is cracked and is arcing.

Re: Johnson gt150 power pack questions.

Captain Jack thanks for the reply.

It was linked to the coil. There was actually a crack in the rubber elbow on the ignition wire, right at the coil. It was arcing to the exhaust cover/block, every fire.

At the advice of another, he said the same, " faulty coil, or dirty ground bolt". Suggested i started it at night with the cover off an inspect.

Within 5-seconds it was noticed.

Never heard the arc before since the exhaust was louder on land with only water ear muffs. Then when the motor was submerged i noticed the noise right away.

Thanks and be safe.
