Re: 35 Pics of Lake George, NY 6-8-08
First place i ever drove a boat.. love it up there.. did you see the resort called Silver Bay.. i don't know where it is on the lake.. but that's where we always stay
Sure, Silver Bay is just below the town of Hague. Silver Bay is one of the prettiest spots on the lake because of the views of the sweeping mountain ranges across the lake.
Some of those pics I snapped were in the Silver bay area as we were cruising South towards the narrows which is peppered with many, many state owned islands to camp on. Most have boat docks too.
It was a 17 mile trip from the Northern tip to the Sagamore Hotel area (That big white hotel pic with all the chairs). Which is the town of Bolton Landing and 17 miles back. Not bad for a 14' 9" Lund
Used only about 8 gal of gas round trip.
But this lake can get ugly fast because it's surrounded on all sides by such high mountains the heat can rise and catch the cold upper air and storms come fast at you over the mountains. All of a sudden you're in 4 foot seas! That's why this year, I added the 8 foot antenna and fixed mount VHF. The first season I used a Standard Horizon handheld which was totally useless on a lake that twists along the mountainous shores.
With the new radio I was pulling in Coast Guard break ins all day alerting me to bands of thunder showers which were moving over NY City at the time which was 5 hours South of our position. Even though the max range is 25 miles line of sight it still picks up regional Coast Guard alerts because they broadcast from the tops of mountains I think so we were picking up alerts from the next region down.
Scary note: along the way since they were predicting late afternoon scattered thunder showers with wind gusts up to 58 miles an hour I was telling my Wife that I set way points along the way when I spot a pavilion type structure for quick shelter on one of those camping islands in case we have to take fast refuge in a lightening storm.
So I felt pretty good about myself thinking I know exactly what my plan would be. We didn't see a drop of rain anyway the whole trip or storm clouds or weather alerts.
So the next day I hear on the news that in a town Massachusetts where the bands of thunder showers first passed over New York and then over to the next state, as a storm was passing overhead some guy went under a pavilion in a park to take cover and lightening struck him "under the pavilion" and killed him.
Oops, good thing I didn't have to follow through on my well thought out plan.
One would think that was the correct thing to have done!!!
Better at least than holding on to an 8 foot fiberglass copper cored antenna
Last season in a town next to mine along the Mohawk River canal system (the old Erie Canal) a young kid was standing next to a BBQ grill the type that is built into the ground on a post. The ground was wet, He was barefoot and lightening struck the grill, went through the ground and up through is bare wet feet and killed him.
Lightening scares the Bejesus out of me when it comes to boating. Just read an article tonight that says the FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN STORMS ARE IN THE AREA IS EVERYONE PUTS ON THEIR LIFE JACKETS. I never thought of that. It's a great idea, cause if you're struck and knocked unconscious and fall out of the boat (especially if you are alone, I wear an auto inflate $85 West Marine suspender type preserver now), at least you would be floating face up!
