I was curious as if there were any available cams for a merc 140?

Also, I was wondering if there's room to port the head, smooth out the chambers, maybe put in larger valves?

Are roller rockers available?

Can you port match the intake/exhaust?

I searched but couldn't find much.

The only way you're going to get more power will be to replace the engine with a bigger one.

Port matching and roller rockers will only make your wallet lighter. Your cam is already ground for max torque in a marine application (at marine rpms...).

Unless you have open exhaust, port matching, bigger valves won't do much. The exhaust systems for sterndrive engines (thru-prop ex) it the limiting factor on how well they breathe.

Crane, Comp or other cam grinders could probably grind you a cam but it wouldn't be much of an improvement over the stock merc cam.

Your other choice if you want more power might be to put either a V-6 or a V-8 in that boat.....but then you would probably have to change the drive, add different mounts/transom plate and possibly a different gimbal.

I hate to say it but if you want more power.....you may have to find a different boat.

Cheers,

Rick

its not that...its just....I'm like the tool man, and seem to have to modify everything I have.

I figure, I can port the head and intake myself, flow bench it and all. Not to mention, with compression only being 8.5:1, I could probably mill the head a bit too to bump up cr to get a little power too.

Just wheels in my head turning.

Do whatever you want. You gotta remember that a V8 exhausts through the same outdrive. Just pay attention to valve overlap and if you bore that block you best overbore and sleeve it. Not much in the way of readily available parts though.

Over the years of being a member here, have seen a number of posts/requests on modifing the 3.0L. Like this request, they covered all the basic car engine building areas. I have yet to see a post of the documented results of such work. That should tell you something.

My recommendation is to start collecting parts for a V6/V8 conversion, if your boat is worth the upgrade.

That 3.0 L engine was never used in a automotive application, it was only marine and industrial. The availability of much after market stuff is limited. It is a great reliable work horse but not a speed demon.

I've seen a bunch started with grand ideas, but by the time it came to obtaining parts plus the fact that 183 cu.in. is about as far as you can go with that block they decide it is much more gooder to have a V8.:D
