Hey gang. I bought some of this Marine GOOP stuff to do a couple small patch/repair jobs and I have a dumb question. Do you think I could mix in a drop or maybe 2 of food coloring to the glue before I apply it to the area to match the color I need to attain, or would this compromise or hurt the strength of the sealant once it's dry? Just something I was thinking about. Thanks! :D

I would not add any coloring to the silicon sealant. Food coloring is water based and will never dry or mix well into the "goop". Not only will it most likely not look the way you want it too it will also leave little colored cavaitys open to failure.

I have used that stuff and it works very well though.

Glad to hear it's good stuff! :) I tried to mix in some food coloring into it and see what it would do on a pice of cardboard and it did mix in ok, but I did notice the little "voids" like knot said. I'll see if I can't come up with something else though. ;) Any suggestions??

To tint any sort of base product you need to use a pigment of the same composition. IE: latex paint uses a latex dye. To use any incompatible blend will cause the end product to fail. This is especially important when your talking about keeping water out of your boat.

Marine "Goop" is a silicone base so you want to tint with a silicone pigment. Check out "Silc Pig" it is a special silicone based dye designed for this type of applicaton. May be what you are looking for.

For those of you interested, I got this answer to my question straight from GOOP Customer Support this morning...

You can add a powder pigment to Goop in order to change the color. You will need to use a drop or two of the solvent Toluene to mix the pigment into the Goop.
