Does anyone know what it would cost to have the tilt/trim replaced on a 40hp vro Johnson ? Can you just replace the hydrolic pump or must you replace the motor and pump? Thanks for the help.

Re: Another tilt/trim questions

First, it would not raise up.The motor will run but would not move the motor. Second when I tried to release the preasure I do belive I messed up, I removed an allen bolt and when I did a bearing fell out. When I tried to drain the fluid in the front of the unit nothing came out so thats when I seen the allen bolt. This is all new to me, trying to save money may have cost me more.

Heres another question. Do you have power trim and tilt or is this a tilt assist unit? power trim will have a push button switch you use. tilt assist will have a lever you use.

Power trim. there is a up/down on the motor and on the hand control for the gas.

Ok, yes you cost your self some $$. You have not indicated if the trim motor runs in the up mode or not, if you hear the trim motor running you have hydraulic issues. If the trim motor does not run it may have been as simple as a wiring issue or a faulty relay. Now the screw you removed is another issue. At this time you need to get it to a service facility.

If you can, take a picture of the allen head bolt, post it on here along with year and model # of your motor. You can probably fix the tilt/trim for a few dollars especially if you can find the "bearing" (which is actually not a bearing but a valve seat most likely).

It sounds like your initial problem was just a lack of fluid which is a very easy fix. But now you're going to have to tear into the unit to find where that valve seat went before you can do anything else.

In the interim, check out Evinrude's Online Parts Catalog to see if you can determine where that "bearing" came from.

Evinrude Online Parts Catalog

Choose the year, motor size then model number. Then click on Tilt/Trim Hydraulic or something to that effect. You can zoom into the parts diagram to get a better view.

Re: Another tilt/trim questions

Reggie 08, Thanks for the parts catalog site. I found out the year and there it is. It is a ball valve seat not a bearing and there is no spring just an o-ring which I still may have. Again thanks alot for the help, what is the best way to get the fluid into the tank? Do they sell a hose or something to get the fluid in the pump? I had a very hard time trying I can not get a funnel in there either and suggestions?

Re: Another tilt/trim questions

It can be tough. I found some tilt/trim fluid at Walmart that had a small nozzle/point on the end. That helped a little. You might try using a small hand pump maybe? When I serviced mine, I just removed it from the transom bracket and mounted it into another bracket I built to bench test it.

Re: Another tilt/trim questions

Not a problem. I feel your pain with the tilt/trim. I put new seals in mine and had trouble getting it to work. Turned out I had a ball valve installed wrong. Once I figured that out (to the tune of several packs of cigarettes, a lot of frustration, cussing and trim fluid), it worked flawlessly. If you're unable to get a pump to work, try buying some flexible tubing for an icemaker/water dispenser on a fridge.

Reggie08, I did get it working on Sunday. I do belive I have a bad seal somewhere which is causing me to loose fluid. Thanks alot for all the help.
