Can't keep 76 Evinrude 25hp running

I posted some issues the other day and am making some progress. Things are easier now that I've found the primer button. The motor continues to die after a while and when I go to the tank bulb, it feels empty. I did replace it and it does firm up in the beginning. I tried to keep pumping it to keep it running so I could play with the lean/rich adjustment, but didn't notice much difference. The other thing is when I came in the house I smelled like oil. I know it was suppose to be 50:1, but someone at work said a mechanic told him it would be better to run it at 32:1. I've also replaced the plugs. So why is it dying out and what can I do? I don't have the service manual yet or the knowledge to rebuild the carbs at this time.Should I clean out the screen in the fuel filter? Is it because of the 32:1 fuel ratio? I'd like to keep it running and get it in the water so I can see if this thing even floats. Thanks

So this mechanic that a guy at work knows is smarter than an OMC engineer?
It may run better until you seize the engine.

On a 2-stroke the oil in the gas is also the lubricant for the crank bearings and everything else, get it back to 50:1 before you run it again or you will damage the engine.

Get an OEM manual(not Seloc or Clymers) for it here at iboats or try your luck on Ebay and clean the carbs, with the manual it is a breeze.

If your carbs are dirty it isn't gonna run no matter what else you do to it.

The way it was explained to me was a little more oil added, would be more benificial. But I will get it back to 50:1, my clothes stunk when I came in. I will definitely order the manual tonight(thanks for the tip on which ones not to get)Is this the owners manual or service manual? And you said it was a breeze with the manual, the cleaning? or rebuilding?

Wolfman,

A fuel mixture of 32:1 has MORE oil than a 50:1 mix, it's simply a ratio of gasoline to oil. The other advise is a bit azzz backwards. Running at 32:1 will not burn up the motor for lack of lubrication...gees. It can be an issue, where some motors without roller bearings would benefit from a richer (more oil) mixture. In those cases. most guys realize the extra oil is a good thing.

You'd be ordering a service manual not the owners manual. The manual will walk you through all aspects of servicing you motor, both mechanical and electrical.

Opps, I was still on my first cup of coffee, I will pay more attention in the future.

I usually mix 50:1 then add just a bit to be safe, and yes a factory serviec manual makes everything so much easier.

A guy at work is having trouble with his motor and said he had a manual he would bring in and I could show him where to look for what he had to fix, it was a Cylmers and covered 20 different engines from 2-70 horse and had no tests or trouble shooting, just told how to remove and install everything, worthless.
