I have a 1998 GMC Sonoma 2WD with a 4.3 motor and an extended cab. Will this truck pull a 18 ft. boat with a dry weight of around 2500 pounds? I am worried about it pulling it up the ramp.

should handle it with no problems, if ramp is sandy, get a couple of fellows to jump in the bed.

Re: will this truck pull this boat?

People don't think much about the style of tire they have on two wheel drive vehicles but that alone makes a great deal difference on how a vehicle works on a ramp. A tire with a grippy tread pattern works best on those sandy, wet, and slippery ramps. If it does pose a problem, a limited slip rear end can be had in any salvage yard for a reasonable cost (assuming the truck does not already have one). As for towing, I tow an 18 foot pontoon with my S10 although it is a 4WD.

Re: will this truck pull this boat?

Years ago I had a 92 s10 2.8 v6 reg cab short box and on a good concrete ramp with no moss/algae or sand I could pull out a 18ft ski boat no problem.

Some tips from my expience.

Stay on the ramp - don't get off to the side with the truck or trailer or back in to far.

Avoid bad ramps. Something covered with sand is going to be a problem.

Keep the rear wheels on dry concrete.

Weight in the bed will help. People, cooler, gear from the boat etc...

Just take it easy the first couple of times until you get the feel for it. Horsing one around will usually get you into all kinds of trouble.

Check this link out, if you have the Vortec V6 like My 96' GMC Sonoma ext cab 2WD auto. with an open 3:08 rear, you'll have no problems with it's power, or durability, I tow my 19' Bayliner pkge about 3000k total on weekly basis with no problem! Unless of course your ramp is slippery, then any vehicle would have a problem.

Look in your glove compartment for the code letters -
G4 = 3:08 rear
G5 = 3:23 rear
G6 = 3:42 rear
Positraction would help, just curious let me know your gears?

Re: will this truck pull this boat?

The 1998 Sonoma, 2wd extended cab, with the 4.3 litre V6, auto trans and either 3.73 or 3.42 rear end, appears to have a maximum tow capacity of 5,500 lbs. While you may not have the lower gear ratio, I would say that you are fine at 2,500 lbs. I also recommend that you look in your owners manual to see what the exact setup of your truck is.

The 4.3 litre GM motor is about as good a motor as anyone has ever built. I have one in my 2000 Astro and it has over 150,000 miles on it. My vehicle has the tow package and is rated to tow 6,300 pounds. After a lot of miles, many of which were with a trailer on the back, my vehicle is still going strong.

One of the things that makes this motor so great IMO, is that it is a large displacement V6. These days, there are a number of V8s that are only slightly larger in displacement, yet they spread that displacement across 8 cylinders, generally resulting in less torque. A large displacement V6, on the other hand, tends to be more of a "stump puller."

The only caution that I would offer on your vehicle is that it is light and doesn't have the braking capacity that some larger vehicles do. Your trailer probably doesn't have brakes so it will fight your pickup a bit in rapid stops. For this reason, I recommend that you practice good trailering techniques and maintain as much interval as you can when on the road. Keep your speed down and brake early - this will provide greater safety and less wear & tear on your truck. If you do tow at weights much over the 2,500 pounds that your current setup involves, I would suggest that the trailer have brakes.

3.73 and 4.11 gears were also offered. I have 3.73's in my S10 Crew Cab. I tow my walleye boat in OD but the pontoon needs direct just because of the wind resistance. Pontoons are not very aerodynamic.

The truck has 3.42 gears in it. I doesn't have limited slip. the tires are Firestone Destination LE's (all season highway) with less than 10,000 miles on them. All of the ramps I plan on using are concrete.

On the 98' V6 S-10, & Sonoma's I believe that they all came stock with a 3:42 rear, both my 96' V6 Sonoma, & my recent 95' S-10, came stock with 3:08 gears :rolleyes: :(

Yours should have a G6 code on the tag on the inside bottom of the glove box then.
Mine both say G4!

Here's the info to back this up:

P.S. You're Good to Go then!

You are in good shape, that 4.3 is a strong motor and will pull that boat no problem. I had a '90 Blazer with the 4.3 and would haul about anything I needed.

Re: will this truck pull this boat?

Hi,

I just sold my 1995 S10 - 4x4 - 5 Manual - 4.3 - I think it had gears in the low 3's if not mistaken......no problem on the ramp, however it was not a joy on any type of long incline. I would run out of juice going up a hill and have to keep her in 3rd gear at 35-40 mph. The later S10's had more HP, so this could change things, however I decieded to go with a 98 Explorer with 205 hp and 4.10 rear...its a big difference.

Just my thoughts....MS

The proper rear end gearing makes a big difference on these because, the automatic transmission is geared low in the first 2 gears, so they lug some in OD, especially with my stock 3:08 or higher ratio gears. I don't know what the stock rear gearing would be for a 95' S-10 with manual trans, but it usually is higher gearing then an auto? But I did find my 96' would give me 20mpg around town, when not towing anyway.

Re: will this truck pull this boat?

That truck will tow your boat without any problems at all. My buddy has been pulling his 1990 20ft cuddy cabin Bayliner for 10 years now. He has the same truck, same year as yours. But his has the ZQ8 package and a 5 speed with 3.08 gears. If yours is the auto, you should have 3.42's, so it would be even easier than my buddy's. His was loaded down with a bunch of fishing gear as well.
