I have a 1995 48 johnson, it idles great and trolls great but when you give it fuel it floods the bottom carb and plug out gas spits from the front of the carb. i just had both carbs rebuilt and the fuel pump rebuilt and the problem is still there. its been in the shop 7 or 8 times and it will run good the first time you start it up but as soon as you slow down and try to speed up again it will not go (no Power) you can have some one walk to the front of the boat and sit there for 5 seconds and the boat will take off again. but if they stay beside you in the seat it will not run correct. if some one could help please do so getting flustrated with this thing.HELPPPP Please.oh comprestion check and spark test was run on the boat ond they checked out great.

It still has a carb problem, despite the rebuild. Take it back to the place that did the carb overhauls and explain the problem.

I have taken it back 7 or 8 times hes trying to say it is a prop problem but the boat has never acted like this before. its always run great. could that be a problem now?

find another mechanic. if he is saying a carb spitting gas is a prop problem. he knows nothing. very possibly a reed problem. i had an 88 48hp that the venturi in the top of the carb on the low speed jet, 2 of the venturi were clogged. not allowing fuel to get thru.

I have an evinrude parts motor sitting in the garage, if you want to try any parts. It is a 48, from the mid 80's I beleive. You will have to check if the parts are interchangeble.

Re: major problem with a 48 johnson

just a quick update to tell all that replyed thanks for the help. as to the problem with the boat spiting gas it was a reed problem a bolt from some where had sliped past the carbs and slid into the valve reeds and had it stuck open. we found it today. the boat is now running like it did on day one of being bought.(fyi) the bolt had been there for years and had been droped from the mfg. it is the only exsplanation that i can come up with. the reason i say this is even though the carbs and fuel pump had been rebuilt the problem never changed untill we removed that bolt today thanks again for the replys:)
