First let me say i am someone who knows nothing but wants to learn everything! I am very naive when it comes to boats so please bear with me here. This is my first boat so i dont have a clue what i am doing. I just got a yamaha 15 hp outboard with tiller handle motor for pretty cheap from a friend. When putting it on the boat I clued in that there is a steering wheel and gear/speed levers at the front of the boat  . There is also a cable pulley thing  at the back of the boat where the motor sits. I am guessing that this is to hook up to the motor. :D There is also 2 cables coming from the gear/speed levers from the front. My question is How can i hook them up to the motor. The manual for the motor says nothing in it for hooking up a steering wheel. I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but i am totally lost and have no idea what to do. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Pulley steering system?

I'm pretty consertive when it comes to remote steering on a small motor/boat.What boat is it?
it adds unecessary weight and complication.
My suggestion would be to remove it and save it for a a later application.
Pulley steering is best replaced with modern cable steering.Your motor may not even have provisions for steering and controls. You'll need to find out what controls you have and if any adapters exist to adapt to your motor.
Depending on the boat you may need to move weight forward to balance
your weight in the stern.tank, battery, anchor live well, bait bucket cooler etc.
If you need to move yourself forward try a tiller extension or stick steering.
Stick steering takes up less space and is relatively light.

Re: Pulley steering system?

Who made the boat? What size? Style of hull? Year and model of motor?

A couple pics would be nice. :)
Can't help you much without the above

Re: Pulley steering system?

A tiller steer motor has no provisions for remote controls (steering, speed, or gear shift). Tiller steered motors have all of that right on the motor. So even though the motor was obtained cheap, you have a decision to make. IF there is a remote control kit available for that motor and IF you can find one, you need to convert it for remote controls. You can certainly run the boat as it is without the steering and shift/throttle controls. As was suggested, get rid of the pulley system entirely if you intend to make this work. Replace it with a modern single cable system. Depending on how large the boat is, a 15 HP motor may not be large enough for it anyway. My suggestions therefore are 1) Sell the boat and replace it with a boat that takes a tiller steer motor and does not need remote controls, or 2) sell the motor, make a little money on it, and buy one that is remote control ready and of appropriate horsepower for the boat.
