Lower Unit Issues

Hello everyone, I have some issues that are making me pull my hair out. I have a 64 9.5 Johnson and it is taking in water in the lower unit. I have replaced all seals in the lower unit, spaghetti seal, shift linkage o-ring, propshaft seal, seal under water pump. The only item I havent replaced yet is the paper gasket under the water pump plate. I havent preessure tested the lower unit but I am an auto technician and have a smoke machine so I tried smoking it and have not found any leaks. What does that paper gasket seal off? Any recommendations?

You'll have to pressure test it or else you're just guessing at the problem.

Yes, I replaced all drain and fill gaskets, along with the bolt o-ring that runs through for shift linkage. What is that paper gasket sealing because I never replaced that (parts house said it wasnt needed for lower end service).

Re: Lower Unit Issues

The gasket under the BEARING plate seals the bearing plate to the gearcase oil chamber and leakage there certainly is a problem. There is no gasket between the Pump plate and Bearing plate...just some gasket sealant there.

The bearing plate is easy to bend or crack while getting the drive shaft seal out, then it won't seal to the gasket (?)
