I will summarize as best as possible...

Anyone had these symptoms w/ a carb'd yamaha?

Initially, I had alot of water collecting in my separator. The engine would die. I would stop change filters & it would run good for a while. I have kept draining the water to the point that now there is very little in the sight glass. Then it would run good for a while, then start to miss. RPM's fell from 5600 to about 4700 & temporarily to about 3600. Found where one coil wire may have been arcing to the block & taped it. It ran great for 2 hours straight this weekend UNTIL after running slow w/ the trim all the way up to make a large wake, got up to run & RPM's max'd out @ 4700 again. Another time it acted up after bouncing over a wave. Pulled the cowling check wires for spark & arcing while it was missing @ idle. Pulled plugs, they were a little wet. One plug had oil or something in the gap (??) but looked OK. After it cools off it will run fine for a while & it ran 5 miles back to the dock but still missed at idle intermittently.

Came home & replaced the plugs which I found were gapped @ .026 & should have been @ .039. Put the new plugs in & this is where I am right now, just need to find time to take it back out before & l head offshore in a couple of days. I have checked for loose wires/grounds to no avail. I did read somewhere that a bad battery can cause mystery issues like this????

I am hoping the new plugs fixed it, just not sure if the old plugs could have caused an intermittent problem...

Any thoughts??

Rodbolt is the expert. But I can tell you from experience that running the boat at high rpms with water in the fuel will smoke a piston. It happened to me. You need to get all the water out of your system. Check your battery cables, change your filters, make shure your spark plug wires are secure, use plastic ties if needed and check the resistance in the plug caps with an ohm meter, it should be around .5-.6 or at least all 6 of them shoud be about the same reading.

yes, this issue I see all the time.
once any trash/debris gets past the water seperator its in the fuel pump and carbs.
about the only way to get it out is dissasemble and clean it.
usually on the carbs all you need is a fuel bowl gasket. I also reccomend replcing the fuel pumps about every 3 years.
you may wish to run a fuel system vacum check after you clean the carbs and replace the fuel pumps.
to check the plug caps, if they are orange, simply unscrew them from the plug lead. resistance should be in the 6Kohm range plus or minus 1K.
I wish you folks would post model number as here at the house I cant access the information by the seriel number. model numbers tell me the engine desighn,ign system type and a few other odd details. seriel number doesnt say much.
when your saying your seperator, is this a hull mounted one or the filter on the side of the engine?

Also, I have racor water separator inside the transom... Water does accumalate & turns the sight glass into a darker tea color. I watch it & drain it as needed.

I think you may have waited to long once.
like I say, test compression test spark. if its all ok then start hunting fuel system clogs/restrictions.
if your using alcohol fuels(E-10) be aware that the E part can actually shuttle water right through a water seperator but it wont clear the carb bowls.
the alcohol molecules are much larger than water and smaller than gasoline, its a shuttle buss for watery fuel now, and a standard gravity water seperator is all but useless but its the best avalible to most of us.

How can I drain the bowls?? Is it the flathead screw that i cannot get to that runs vertically from the bottom or is it the hex head bolt that runs horizontally across the bottom of the bowl??

you can try pulling the drain, however usually it doesnt work. remember lean running can burn a piston.
on yours the drain is the 12mm hex plug.

Gday Rodbolt...I noticed your recommendation re changing fuel pump...I have a 93 115 V4 Yam...original fuel pump and about 500 hours...should I be changing mine?

you know better than thread hijacking.
but yes, it should have been changed or rebuilt long ago.
dunno how parts are there, here the rebuild parts are a;most what a new pump is without the 80 dollar an hour labor.
so that coice is yours. nice thing is they are very simple to rebuild. just depends on the cost of parts VS new.

here the parts are about 28 dollars and at 80/hr if i spend 15 min the customer just bought a brand new rebuilt pump, pump new is about 40dollars
