Hello. I have been working on this motor for a few weeks now but can't seem to get it to run right. I have removed the carb, soaked it over night, and rebuilt it with a carb kit. I have also changed the cap, screen and gasket on the fuel pump and am using fresh fuel (50-1 mix). The low speed needle was backed out 1/2 turn, however the idle speed knob on the side is something I am not sure of. Is it one half turn out too?

It does run but only if I manipulate the choke. If I don't use the choke it dies right after starting. It does seem to rev really high before dying? Did I miss something?

Thanks for the help

Motor is a 74,
initial idle mixture setting is 1 turn out from gently seated.Needs to be final adjust warm idling in gear.Idle speed adjust turn so the throttle just cracks open. When rebuilding the carb you need to confirm all passages and jets are clear. Your symtoms indicate poor fuel supply probably the carb.If squeezing the primer bulb helps keep it running you may have fuel pump problrms.

If it idles on the choke but not without then either to slowspeed mixture setting is wrong or the carb is still not clean.

I think you will find that the initial setting for the slow speed mixture needle is approx 1? turns unscrewed from fully in but is adjusted for best running when warmed up

Look at the posts on the ENGINE FAQS BOARD on carb cleaning and carb needle adjustments

Great thanks for the tips.

I'll remove and clean again. Is there an easier way of getting the carb off without having to remove the starter?
