What do you guys use to polish your windows frames and other stailess steel hardware? What about aluminum?

Thanks!

Re: Polishing Stainless Steel

I use Nevrdull on everything to protect it. If something tarnishes and needs polishing, I use Mothers Mag and Wheel polish to shine it back up, then Nevrdull on top of that to protect.

I have one section that has some rust on it, (little more than surface rust), can I do anything to bring it back? Can I sand it?

The fact that it has a little more than surface rust would put some doubt into my mind about the material.

Check to see if it magnetic first. If it?s stainless it will not be magnetic. If it?s not magnetic chances are that it?s been plated with something and sanding will do more harm than good.

Flitz metal polish seems to work well. Grady White includes a small sample package in their owners packet with each new boat. Cleans and protects.

Nevrdull is my choice. And it also cleans up some surface rust like i had. Wipe it down after applying it with a clean cotton cloth and watch it shine. :)

That is not true. SS material comes in both magnetic, and nonmagnetic grades. The non mag. grades do tend to be more corrosion resistant.....................a little more info......... http://www.physlink.com/Education/AskExperts/ae546.cfm

Re: Polishing Stainless Steel

I assume that you are asking about polishing already polished stainless. If so, NeverDull will do. If you really want to make it shine, sandpaper will do the trick. If you already have polished stainless, you just need 1800-2000 grit to put on a mirror finish in much quicker time than you ever could with any paste product.

One of my other hobbies includes shiny things. I have mastered polishing rough stainless brake rotors out to mirrors. I use nothing but sandpaper even though I have a heavy duty bench buffer and a pile of wheels/compounds.

if it is fairly flat you can use an 800 disc on the dual action sander or sand by hand. Then go to a four inch grinder wth a canvas 1"x4" pollishing pad and green white or red rouge. You can get those canvas polishing wheels for bench grinders too.You might want to use gloves...that steel gets hot

Ok, I was a little too general and unclear with my statement. Let me clarify.

Ferritic stainless is used mainly used in the manufacturing of appliances, home decor and in the automotive sector for mufflers and tail pipes. Realistically there should be no ferritic stainless on a boat. If your rails are magnetic either they have been plated or your manufacturer was cutting corners to save a buck.

Is that better? :D

Do you mean wet sand paper with water? Or perhaps using it in combination with the polish?

No, I mean dry. Of course like with sanding anything else, you don't want to start with coarser than you need or you will get scratches. For something like the rails on a boat, I would start with something over 800 grit. When, I polish out rotors, I always get the first part of a mirror shine using 800. 1800 will make it look like chrome.

Re: Polishing Stainless Steel

Anita (wife) saw the worker furiously cleaning up all the S/S on a MacGregor.....big job.
Said to me we should try her cleaner.....which we poo-hoo'ed etc.....anyway out it comes and bingo...amazing..........still can't believe the results and little effort required.
Anita changed the kitchen appliances last year and went for the S/S look.
This cleaning product comes in a little 250ml pump pot and you buy it in the Supermarket....it is made for cleaning S/S appliances.....cheap as......and the bad stuff too......with little effort.
We have cleaned up 3 boats with it now.
Give it a go.
Cheers
Phillip
