Took Boat Back To Evinrude Shop In Town Here And He Called And Said Leaky Head Gasket Was Causing Engine To Run Away After I Back Out Of The Throttle Or Engine Not To Idle Unless You Overide Neutral And Choke It To Start, idles At 1400rpm's After It Warm And When You Try To Stop From W.o.t It Keeps Going And Then Engine Dies???
I found your other post about carbs being repaired by Evinrude shop. Was the problem there before or after they repaired the carbs. Did they change carb jets? How do they know the head o-ring is leaking? Warter on the plug does not always indicate a leaking o-ring on this engine. Rattling noise a different problem to work on after the other problems fixed.. The carb repair might need a second look.
Whether this is the problem or not, there is some way that fuel is getting into the engine when the butterflys are shut or the engine could not run on like it is!
As to the rattle, that is common with some engines and can be stopped by not cutting the throttle as quickly!
Make sure that the butterflys are completely closed at Idle, and I mean "COMPLETELY"!
I Should Be In The Sunshine State!!!the Reason I Took Boat In Is Because It All Of The Sudden Started To Not Idle And Overrev When I Backed Off The Trottle-i Would Key It Off When It Started To Overrev, then Try Starting And Engine Would Not Idle Or It Would Idle At 2000rpm's,took It In And Repair Shop Said I Need A Complete Carb Job-$350 Later Took Boat Out To Try It And Now The Tach Dont Work And It Runs The Same As It Did Before I Took It It The First Time, took It Back To Him And He Said He Can See Oil Bubbling Out Of The Head O-rings And Someone Had It Apart Before And Siliconed The Gaskets All Up And Thats Why Its Overreving Because Its Running To Lean??
The silicone is used to seal the water passage between the block and head, it should be there. I think the only way you will know the head seals are leaking is to remove the head for a visual inspectional. I would recheck the carb job, esp the seal between the carb body and throttle body. If the tech used a aftermarket carb kit, may not have included this seal. After you get it to idle and you still have the rattling noise, increase the fuel in the mid range by change the midrange jet. The tech should know this if he has worked on many of the 60 degree engines. You can call me at 850 319 9663
