I have a 1976 Evinrude 135HP. When I run it on land it starts right up and idles pretty good. When I get out on the lake, It takes me a long time to finally get it started and it likes to die out when I am idleing it. Could this be the fuel pump? The carb was just rebuilt and the fuel filter is clean. Any suggestions?

Re: 135hp Evinrude ruff idle

You need to set the idle up. It has to be fine tuned in gear on the water.
Try setting the idle to around 1000 RPM on the muffs, then fine tune it to about 650 RPM on the water.

When the motor is on muffs there is no back pressure and no mechanical load so it idles at about 300+ RPM higher.

When you cold start the 135, you have to be sure that the chokes are 100% closed, the warm-up lever on the remote control must be raised all the way up and the battery must be fully charged.

Since you have just had the carburetors worked on, take the cover off and watch to be sure that the chokes are synchronized and absolutely closed when you hold the choke switch while cranking. If they don't stay closed, move the choke solenoid down in small increments until they do stay closed.

Watch the throttle roll pins on the sides of the carburetors to be sure that they are synchronized. The engine cannot run smoothly unless the throttle plates are perfectly aligned with each other.
