I have a 1987 17' Bayliner Capri 1750. I took it to a shop to get it re upholstery. Is $700 a good price to re upholster the Entire boat ? The shop is charging me $700 this includes Material and labor.

Sounds like a great price to me. I was quoted $2200 for my 20' bowrider.... and thats was just for a partial job.

Are they replacing the foam inside also? If it's never been replaced, I'll bet it needs it. If so, that sounds like a fair price.

Oh...and do a little research. Make sure they are using good material and uv protected thread... if not, you will be paying them another 700 in a couple years.

700 bucks is dirt cheap, IMO. I'd ask about what vinyl they are using and ask to see the spec sheet on it. The sheet will show wear rates, UV stabilility, cold rating and so on. I had the 3 seats in my Jeep done a few years ago using premium material. The material I picked was 26 bucks a yard. It took 6 yards. They guy that did it has a one man shop, so his overhead is low. I paid $450.00. Just making a guess-ti-mate, I'd say it would cost about $1k to have him do a runabout using the same material.

This is the material that I used:

Sure, it was expensive but looks and feels like leather. By comparison, I reupholstered my camper last year using marine vinyl from Joanne Fabrics. It was only 10 bucks a yard. There is no comparing the two quality wise.

Re: Bayliner upholstery

Seems like a very good price.
I would ask to what detail they are going to go to? The original seats have multi-color sections with piping, folds, etc around.
Find out if they are going to just doing them in a single color vinyl slab? Multi-color? As 12V said, find out what kind of foam? Re-using the original?
There might be some initial detail missing in that quote which might be worth a few questions.;)
I've seen a couple of the economy re-upholstery jobs and although reasonable in function they do not really flatter the boat...a little too plain.
My two bits.

They are also replacing the foam inside. The interior is going to be all white with a blue or yellow stripe in the middle.

Re: Bayliner upholstery

Juat the materials for a decent job on that would be $500 or close to it. I don't see how anyone can do it for $700. Good foam has gone way up in price as has upholstery to a lesser degree. I'm all for a bargain, just make sure you know what materials you're getting.

Also, if the upholstery needs to be redone, what is the condition of the seat bases? Is the wood fine?

Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

The seat bases can be made pretty easily... Just use patterns off of old wood.

Re: Bayliner upholstery

That price is dirt cheap! But, before you go sinking $700 into the upholstery make sure the floor and transom are solid. Especially if this boat is new to you.
