Re: Do I need a bigger ATV to pull my gimbel bearing?
Hello everyone,
Nothing to add here, just my gimbal bearing story.
Last night I tried numerous hillbilly methods to get out the gimbal bearing holder. The following methods do not work:
- Prying with a screwdriver. Screwdriver will bust and send flying shard into your face area.
- Prying with a larger bar. Fulcrum was the gimbal ring, a $450 item I pictured cracking so didn't put any real muscle into it.
- Drilling and cutting. It will take forever, get metal shards all over the place, and not be sucessful before the sun goes down.
- Standing there with friend drinking beer looking at it. The bearing did not budge with this method either.
Came home and searched here. What worked was going to AutoZone and getting the slide hammer / 3-jaw puller. That took 3 minutes to assemble and 30 seconds to remove the bearing. Cost free when I return it ($85 deposit).
Boat is freshwater 1979 Lund with a 470. I am putting an SE106 generic stern drive on it. Family boat with sentimental value, hope to get a couple more years out of the 470 and cheap replacement drive.
Thank you iboats forums. Back to the marina to finish up!
