Outdoor carpet adhesive Q

Hey guys -

I have been applying carpet to my boat parts using weldwood contact cement, and it's not working so hot.

I also have a bucket of indoor/outdoor carpet adhesive I might try. My question is this: If I let the adhesive dry for a while, will it get sticky enough so I can stick the carpet in place on a vertical surface and have it stay?

The problem I had when I tried it is that it only becomes hard enough to hold the carpet after about 2 days... I'd have to clamp it in place to use it.

The weldwood only works when I coat both surfaces (glass and carpet back) with cement before joining, but even then I would have to fair all the surfaces smooth before using the stuff, otherwise I get uneven contact/gluing. The paste stuff fills gaps better because it's thicker.

Suggestions welcome. I'm attaching carpet to the vertical insides of my hull, and I'm using a basic cheap indoor/outdoor carpet.

Thanks,
Erik

Yep, I even found it at ace hardware; pricey, but works. Make sure you get they right kind, they don't interchange. One kind even welds blue plastic tarps like factory.

I used some 6700 indoor/outdoor carpet adhesive from the Home D place. I troweled it out with a carpet adhesive trowel. I applied the carpet just after laying down the adhesive, to include verticle surfaces. I could make some minor adjustments, then rolled the carpet down with a paint roller. It stuck just fine and never moved.

The trick is to trowel it properly, and not have too much adhesive in any places. Trowel out any "glops" to make it even.

You should have a wood liner or composite where your hull and top come together...Simply staple the carpet to that and cut off the excess when it dries.. I can post pic's if you like. As to glue id use a PL 11 two part poly avaible at home depot...dries like a rock in hour's no bubbling

Hmmm.... I have 3m super 90, tried that, and it didn't seem to stick well. I noticed you have to wait a bit for it to dry some, otherwise it just pulls away and forms "spiderwebs". Hmmm, I'll have to experiment some more.

I think I have super 77 somewhere, I'll give that a try, and if that or the 90 doesn't work then it's back to the paste adhesive. I do have a bit of wood I could staple it to, but I think I'd rather find another way....

I tried to use that Super 90 on some rubber mat I put in the ski locker. It didn't stick too well. I used it according to the directions too, but ended up taking it all out and cleaning the gooey stuff with some acetone.

I also noticed that spray stuff doesn't go very far. I did use it to glue down a small piece of carpet to the "floor" of my glovebox, and it seemed to work for this.

Don't use whatever carpet adhesive BassPro sells for boats. Horrible.

Re: Outdoor carpet adhesive Q

Okay, sorry to pester you guys with this again, but I used this stuff to carpet my doghouse.

I troweled it (the 6700 adhesive from Home Depot) on and let it sit for about two hours. After that I put the carpet on, and rolled it down with an aluminum billet I had handy.

Two days later it had stiffened up some, but the edges of the carpet were coming up. I pushed them back down.

A week later now it's still not completely dry, the edges keep coming up, and if I try I can peel up a corner or sheet easily. I'd have been better off using double sided tape to put this stuff down.

I'm applying it in my garage, which is currently at a temp of 65-75 depending on time of the day, using a paint stirrer to glop some on to the wood/glass, then spreading it with the fine tooth trowel recommended on the bucket.

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

I put it out in the sun today to bake, hopefully that'll finish the curing, then I can fix the spots that are still loose with something else...

Re: Outdoor carpet adhesive Q

If the edges are pulling up and the carpet adhesive has already dried, work them free and coat the surfaces with contact cement using a small brush, let it dry and coat the surfaces again. Once it has completely dried hammer the carpet down. Don't use the spray contact cement, use the good ol' contact cement that comes in a quart can.

I wouldn't use carpet tape. I used it on my jon boat and the carpet will expand and bulge if baked in the sun. After a year of heavy use the carpet backing pulled free of the tape on a few edges, I used the contact cement to stick the carpet backing to the tape again.

Re: Outdoor carpet adhesive Q

So far I've been just troweling the glue onto the wood/glass, then waiting a while, then putting the carpet down and squishing the whole surface with a roller. Should I be applying to the back of the carpet also?

I do have a can of weldwood, I could try coating the carpet and wood (well, a fresh piece of carpet I guess) then squishing that down.

Just how thick did you go with it?

I did not have the problems you are, but I did lay the carpet right away while it was sticky. It seemed to cure overnight.

For the ends, dab some more glue in there and put it down.

I wonder if the jug of glue you got might have been a bad batch?

I put some on, then troweled it out until the neat rows stood up (notched trowel) then kept scraping and applying until the rows were everywhere, and most of the in between row areas had glue too.

Too much maybe? This stuff doesn't seem to stick very well, really.

fix b52s comment might be bang on......i think you got a bad can of glue........

that stuff is nasty....sticks to everything.....a simple notched trowel should work just great......im at a loss on this...unless the glue is bad

Hunh.

The stuff I got has the consistency of a thick shaving cream, and isn't sticky at all until it dries, when it's about half as sticky as duct tape.

I could give another bucket a shot, it's not like this stuff is expensive. I'll try a different store in case there was a bad case or something.

Any good brands to try?
