I recently acquired a 1972 Rebel Boat Company Fast Back model with the Mercruiser Renault 90 hp stern drive set up. From what I have been reading, the boat itself is rare and was made by Rebel Lure Company from 1971-1973 and the Renault engine was used by Mercruiser from 1970-1972. The trouble I have is that the engine runs great but has a few damaged parts that allow the boat to take on more water than will allow the hull to float. The hull is very solid and worth saving and so is the engine itself. I have found the part numbers and descriptions of what I need but I have no idea where to look to find the discontinued parts that I need. I have disassembled the whole unit and what I found is that I have a broken flywheel housing rubber mount that allowed the engine to flex which snapped the exhaust housing that slides into the transom mount. This lets a steady 1 1/2" - 2" stream of water to flow in through the exhaust bellows and fills the engine bay with exhaust and water. I have a friend that is going to try to weld the housing for me but I would rather replace the mounts, housing and misc. gaskets and do the job right if possible. The main parts I need are #58130 rubber flywheel housing mount, 38371 cover seal, and 55884 exhaust housing cover. Any help suggestions or input will be greatly appreciated.

Im definetly not familure with the motor or boat you are talking about BUT what you are looking for sounds to me like the rubber bellows that are currently used on Mercs.

You may want to take a look at the parts department here and see if there is either something that cross referances over or is the part you need with a new # as merc changed some part numbers not too long ago I beleive.

Thank you for the reply. To my surprise the bellows are actually in good condition and doing their job. The bellows are still in production also and can be bought at few different online shops that I have found. I wish it was a bellows problem. The part numbers I listed are NLA parts as far as I have found. I have a call in to a parts warehouse in Maryland who claims they have some stock left but they haven't had a chance to check the warehouse to be sure. The NLA parts are housed in a different building according to what the parts salesman told me. Thanks again for the response.

I work for a Marina that has been in businees since the late 50's, I think that we may have some old merCruiser parts still kickin around, will take down the part #'s you posted and ck to see if we have any thing that you need.

Will let you know either way.

Re: 1972 Mercruiser Need help.

Thanks to those of you who posted replies. This is what I did and it fixed my situation. I had a friend of my dad's weld the outer exhaust housing cover which solved the water leak. My dad works in a hydraulic shop so I had him find an O tring that had the right amount of crush to make the exhaust housing cover gaskets. As for the broken motor mount, well some things are left untold but I did come up with a fix for it. It runs good now and is 100% water tight. The main problem is that I now have a broken shift cable running from the linkage to the unit. Back to hunting for obsolete parts.
