$4,000 is steep, for a 19 y/o.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.

A 30 year old boat motor combo, may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

As for price check other ads in your area to see if he is out of line.

That is alot of boat for a first time boater, your probably looking at 50-60 MPH top speed which is way scary.

Speed on water is different than speed on land, 60 in a car is no problem but on a boat that is hauling, imagine a 500 acre parking lot with 200 cars on it all going different speeds and directions with no road signs, that is what it is like on a lake.

Take it out and run it at all throttle settings just run it through its paces to be sure it runs like it should and I would have a mechanic look at it before you buy, way less expensive than almost any repair he might save you, it doesn't take much to rack up a giant repair bill.

The guy can say it runs on rainbows but that doesn't make it true.

And a bass boat is pretty finely focused to bass fishing and not good for much more, they are made to go fast and have lots of deck so if you are looking for something to take the family out on I don't know if this is it.

Take your time and look around and make sure you get what will fit your needs.

Have to agree with TASHASDADDY, bit overpriced for a 20 yr. old boat/motor set up. If you like the boat, buy it for the hull, dont expect to much from the engine. If you want the motor, make sure you can drop the leg and the shaft is not seized into the powerhead. Salt of fresh water? Makes a big difference. FRED

if you are comfortable with fast boats through family or other means then id say offer him 3k and walk if the boat is in great shape. if you havent been around fast boats then walk away.. things happen fast at 50-60mph..if its in good shape dont let the year scare you my dad had a 88 ranger that was in better shape than most boats 3 years old and sold it for 10k a year or so ago..

a bass boat is really only setup for fishing with 1 other person.. you can ski and do watersports with them but not comfortably.. theres alot to be said for being in a bay sitting on the fishing platform will do a number on a passenger's *****..i personaly prefer a nice fish n ski setup you get a great fishing platform but also room for 5 people or so.. they are usually rigged with an outboard thats a big plus in my eyes and i wouldnt consider a I/O setup in an older boat..

if you feel the bass boat is what you want then look at it and dont make any decisions and sit on it for a couple of weeks(boats dont sell that fast) then if nothing better comes up(it will) then buy it.. also consider looking in outside markets less than 300 miles away.. traveling for a boat is usually worth it..and for 4k you can get alot of boat..
