gear slipping?

i have a 1983 ranger with mercury 115 2-stroke.today boat was running fine.when i took off from parking as soon as the boat started to plain out it the rpm's went up but the boat would not pull as strong as uswell.when i let off the throutle a little it started pulling again.when giving it more throutle it started slipping again.whats wrong?this is my first boat.

Hi mate, It would be helpful for the guys if you could post the serial no. of your outboard, and what gear oil you have been using if you have changed it yourself. It would be a good idea to drain the GEAR oil and check the condition of it looking especially for metal shavings.

Use a felt pen and draw a line across the prop hub, test run, then check your line to see if the hub has 'slipped'.

Your symtems are classic for the rubber hub between the prop and propshaft failing to hold under heavy load, your local prop shop can press it out and a new one in.

thanks for your info. i pulled the prop off to find the hub teeth where completly gone except on the outer end.so i will get re-hubed. also i am going to change out the lower end oil,i don't know when it was changed last.
