2002 Yamaha VMax HPDI buzzer of death

Just bought the boat with a 2002 Yamaha VMax HPDI. The motor has 97hrs on it and was running great until yesterday when the buzzer started screaming. The guages didn't indicate overheat or low oil. I checked the reservoir on the motor and the oil tank and both are full. The fuel tank is full. The engine went into limp mode but didn't seem to run rough. Water is coming out of the motor in all the right places, so I assume the water pump impeller is good. I stopped the motor and when I got home checked to see if the buzzer would still come on, and it did before I even started the motor. I am no engine mechanic, but is there anything I can do before I take it to the shop?

yes, actually there is.
until 05 the water detect switch in the engine mounted fuel filter worked anytime it detected water, from 05 and up it only works in nuetral.
check the water detect and the filter cup and let us know.

You were right on the money....and you probably saved me quite a bit of money. I checked it, and sure enough, there was enough water in there to set off the buzzer. I dumped it, put the boat in the water, and I am back in business. Thank you!!!!

highly suggest that you check your fuel system for water.....if it's in the filter cup it had to have come from somewhere....

I would also check the hull mounted 10 micron water seperator, if you dont have a 10 micron hull mounted water seperator I would not run it until one was installed and the bottom of the fuel tank cleaned.
boatguy283 points out the obvious, sorry I did not the first post.
thats a very very expensive setup to maintain to start with, we dont want to kill it with water.
its true its water cooled we just cant cool it in the fuel system.

I will check the 10 micron seperator, I think I saw it in the bilge. My question is.....I just bought the boat so I don't know if the cup on the motor has ever been checked (or dumped). Will water accumulate in there over time? Or do I have some bigger problems?

I checked the filter and as you guys suspected, it was full of water. Added dry fuel to the tank and changed the filter. Just wanted to say thank you to all the help. See you on the water.

Bought a wrecked boat with an 04 250 Vmax hpdi. It alamed when the yard started it and loaded it on my trailer. 6months later boat is repaired and motor re-installed. Same thing...alarming.
Began inspection and that was the problem. Water in the engine mounted filter.
ALSO, got a quick question about the oil tank. Never noticed this before, but, checking the boat mounted tank and a few other older Yamaha boat mounted oil tanks, WHY does water not get in thru that hole in the top. (oil pickup tube and pump wiring just sticks into a hole large enough to put them both through...leaving an opening that water, dirt could get in?

cause that hole doesnt enter the tank it just protects the hose and pump wireing.
the pump is mounted external to the tank and is fed by a hose from the tank bottom to the pump. the filter between the tank and the pump intake needs periodic replacement, prefferably before it causes a problem.

is the v max 225 suppposed to use a 10 micron or a 20-25 for the fuel seperator?
