I'd like to install a Johnson on this 1958 Glasspar boat and was wondering if
this looks like where it should go. The boat is rated up to 100 hp and its a
V-90 hp. Little big but its probably temporary until I get the motor bugs worked out.

I can always use the mounting holes where I can raise and lower it a notch or so.

Also what type of bolts should be used and type. (strength)

Thanks

Re: Installing motor on boat questions

The transom was rated at 100 horse 50 years ago be sure it will hold that now.

It looks alittle low, but run it and see, you can always raise it a hole or 2 later and see what difference it makes, standing rule is up and out, run it as high as you can without cavitating.

Mine is mounted with 1/2'' stainless bolts and stainless nylocks,

A good starting point is to have the cavitation plate 1" to 1-1/2" above the bottom of edge of the keel.

Looks low to me - second the concern about the transom.

Re: Installing motor on boat questions

Thanks guys....I was thinking the cavitation plate should 1" to 2" below the keel. And yes it can be mounted so as to adjust if necessary.

Yes I did and do have concerns about the strength of the transom at that age. I was planning to beef it up a bit on the inside to hold this beast.

I'm not comfortable working on this size motor on the stand I have and think it'll be easier and safer to mount it on this boat while I work and test it out. I also don't want to pull the old tired 1960 motor off the boat it is intended for yet cause it runs and can still be used. It may take me awhile to work out the bugs on this newer one since its been sitting for quite awhile...but it does fortunately start right up and idle. I also want to get it out on the water and see whats next to be worked out.

......but on the other hand I may have to rethink this and go ahead and mount it on the bigger boat while I work the bugs out.

Thanks again
