I have a 1995 3.0 chevrolet w/omc cobra with a small gear reduction starter that has failed on me (in the middle of the lake)twice. The guy I bought the boat from replaced it twice. The first time the plastic gear in the planetary stripped. Now the drive gear will not engage the flywheel. Will any of the older full size starters work? The ones without plastic gears. Thanks!!

Ayuh,..... You should be able to find 1, Right up at the top of this page where it says OMC Parts....

The Only variation in the starters for those motors is,...
Are the 2 big retaining bolts holding it to the Block,...
Straight Accross from each other,...
Or Staggered,..??..??

My bolt pattern is straight across but how about flywheel size or the amount of teeth on starter also when looking for the part some are cw and some ccw. Its difficult without the part number. By the way do you know how I can get it? Thanks for the response.

Ayuh,.... But Not for your motor....

The Straight Across pattern starter fits the 12" flywheel......

That's the 1 you want....

What brand is the gear reduction? So I don't buy the same.

Gear reduction starters aren't necessarilly "Junk". More like, the ones you ended up with, were installed, whatever are junk... Maybe. Just like most things in life, cheaper isn't always better. Maybe the manufacturer is junk, or uses junk components?
The gear-reduction starters are more geared (pun) toward high-torque/high-compression motors that need 'em. Maybe you don't need that super-duper/bells 'n' whistle starter?
Like the above posts brought up; is your starter shimmed properly or oriented to the correct flywheel?
