Sound's great :)

Why would you want to leave the boat home? Isn't fun what they are for?

Take the boat and plan your escape.
5:45 am, and not returning until midnight.

Or just send all of them to the lake with your daughter and boat and you and your wife can stay home and celebrate your anniversary!;)

Re: Smith Mountain Lake...

Well... my thinking on not taking the boat is, its a 22' which will handle 9 people ( UGCG ) No way i want 9 people on board...so that means someone gets left out...or i just take all the kids, who range in age from 21 months to 5.....or i leave the kids on shore and take the adults minus a babysitter....or we do split shifts going out....And the final option is to rent a Pontoon Boat.
which is why i will leave my boat at home, all we want to do is have some good family time, and not deal with schedules, just seems easier not having to deal with boating issues...and too many people...??

Take your boat and have the "boatless family's" pitch in and rent a pontoon when they want to go out. The 'toon can be rented as needed. I've done this in the past with my family and it worked out well.

Re: Smith Mountain Lake...

why have a boat and not take it. just you be the captain. and don't let others take it out alone. that's when things mysteriously happen.

Make sure you got enough PFD for everyone on board. It's $250 for each missing PFD around here.

Great Idea !!! i didnt want to be a full time captain..and i dont allow anyone with little or no experience to operate my boats.

But i think my extended family can handle a 'toon after some lessons..

Re: Smith Mountain Lake...

Seeing as how SML used to be my local lake, allow me to throw a few observsations.

The lake can be (and usually is) a zoo in the summer. Yes, it's a huge lake 45,000 acres (almost 45 miles from end to end) and 500 miles of shore line...BUT almost all of that shore line is packed with houses. And almost every one of those houses have at least one boat sitting in their respective boat houses, so as you have probably guessed SML has one of the highest boat densities per mile of water east of the Mississippi.

Did I mention all of the idiots on jet-skis? Hundreds of them! Most of which are piloted be testosterone overloaded teenagers showing off, or as much as I hate to say it, middle aged folks full of alcohol induced bravery and foolishness.

Bass boats? Yup SML has those by the hundreds too. Most of these are piloted by Bass Master wanta-be's who think that 250 hp on the back of their boat means that they rule the water.

BIG cruisers? Got plenty of them too. A goodly portion of which are piloted older folks who are afraid to go fast enough to get the boat up on plane. This results in a nice 3 to 4 foot wake.

Speaking of big wakes, the latest craze on the lake is wake-board boats. After filling all of the on-board bladders which makes their wakes HUGE, they like to cruse around (without a wake boarder in tow) seeing how large of a wake they can create. The fun part is being at the dock when they try to put the boat on the trailer. The resulting hilarity (and dangerous situations) occur when these younger guys (full of testosterone and beer) try to attempt to actually get the boat on the trailer. Then once they do manage to put the boat on the trailer, most of them forget to drain the wake inducing bladders. I have seen hitch balls sheared off and trailer tires popped because of the added weight of 500+ gallons of water in the boat and liberal applications of the throttle.

Do I sound like I am trying to discourage you from going? Not in the least. I just want to give you a little insight as to what you MIGHT see. Remember, SML is a HUGE lake, but with all of the summertime boat traffic, it does get rough. This is because the lake is very narrow for it's size. At it's widest, it's only just over a mile wide, and the majority of the lake is less than 1/2 mile wide.

Now for the good stuff. The scenery is unbeatable, there is good to great fishing depending on the time of day and the boat traffic, and there is plenty to do within 30 miles of the lake itself. The national D-Day memorial is 20 miles away in Bedford. There are numerous restaurants with fantastic food close by. You can rent bow-riders, pontoons and jet-skis at Bridgewater plaza for a reasonable rate, and there are several restaurants there too. One other note, if you do bring your boat, fuel up at any one of the nearby gas stations because gas on the water runs from $.50 to a dollar per gallon higher. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Re: Smith Mountain Lake...

My wife took me down to SML last year for my birthday for the antique wooden boat show. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Just like everyone else has said - great lake and great scenery, but do take the boat. There isn't much to do there unless it's on the water. Also, a lot of folk "commute" around the area by boat (or PWC)- all the restaurants (even the nicer ones) have a place for you to tie up.

Letting the boat-less folk rent a pontoon is a good idea, but you might find you don't even need to because some people might not be interested in boating at all. The place we stayed at had some canoes and paddle boats to loan, so wherever you're staying may do that too. Swimming in the lake is really nice too.

Enjoy - you'll have fun!

Myself & The Posse will be in Goodview..newer house..I've seen photos of the lake and it does look fantastic..as for the boating conditions ..sounds just like the ICW here, too much of everything going on and half of the folks out there are clueless or novice boaters which means extra vigilance, especially with children on board.Which brings me to another funny tangent. While on the phone w/my sister in law (bro's wife) she inquired about weather we will bring the boat..i said yes..evidently the curtain climbers were listening, got all excited, then asked if I was going to be driving...she said yes...Load Groans..seems being that i don't allow them to hang off the bow...or run amok and insist on PDF's all while under way..that makes me a mean uncle....apparently the youngins been doing some boating w/ other family's who allow kids on board to do whatever they want....I think i'll stay the mean Uncle...

Wise choice. I'm the same way with one clevate (sp) if the rug rats parents are aboard I let them make the call on the kids lifejackets when we are at anchor.
