1975 70hp Johnson Won't Shift into Neutral or Reverse

Just got this boat and can't seem to get it into neutral or reverse. I'm not sure what I did but I believe it was working before. I can get it so the prop will spin freely but I think the control unit doesn't recognize it being fully in neutral because it won't turn over either. The guy who I bought it from started it when I got it so I know it worked then. I tried to upload some pictures but the file size is too large.

disconnect the shift cable at the motor, and try it manually. probably old deteriorate cables.

You will probly have to take apart the remote control. Usually the lever skips over a tooth on the shift gear and it jams when you try to go back. Most common cause of this is stiff shift cables. Enjoy the new project.

How much would something like this cost to fix? I just want to get on the water not worry about this anymore.

average $80-100 per hour labor, plus parts. may be worth a little time to trouble shoot your self.

needed a new shift cable

plastic gears were stripped as a result

I also have 1975 70 hp Johnson that wont go into gear cable shifts linkage but no movement. Prop hub seems ok any ideas?
