I might be taking over payment (13000$ loan) for a 2005 glastron sx195 with a volvo 4.3L motor Problem is the water was not drained from the motor over winter. So the exhaust manafolds have big cracks in them and the freeze plug poped out. put the freeze plug back in and ran her, was really hard to turn over the first few times. but ran good, check the oil and it's like 2 quarts over full. So what are the chances of the block being crack, maybe the freeze plug did it's job and saved the block and it's just the head gaskets. there's no visible signs of crack on the out side of the block. The head gaskets are cheap and easy fix. but if the block is shot it's not worth it

any advice would be nice thanks

$13,000 is WAYYYYYYY overpriced for that boat.
There is no "chance" it has a cracked block, it in a certainty.
Run away from that hose job you are about to take.
Hell, $3,000 would be a lot for it regardless of other condition.

you might as well get an 18000$$ loan because your looking at a 13K boat that needs 5K worth of work....

You answered your own question! Get on out of there. Check out craigslist or something, because 13000 will get you a lot of boat there.

Welcome!

If you're trying to help someone out, you'd be better off giving them a couple grand cash up front and then walking away... it'll be less painful for you in the long run.

The engine is probably gone, and the rest of the boat is worth something, but nowhere close to $13k. Probably more like 3k to 4k if it has a nice trailer.

By the way, the "freeze plugs" aren't freeze plugs. They're just plugs meant to seal holes in the water passages that are there from when they are cast. They typically pop if an engine freezes, but they aren't saving anything.

If you really want to know what's wrong I'd have a marine mechanic assess the engine for repairability. I'd also have a marine surveyor give you an idea of the condition of the boat.

Well, you've got your answer, sad as it is to hear - hopefully more sad for the current owner assuming you haven't bought it yet. btw, unless he/she knows zip about boats and/or engines you were being taken. That $13K is about what the boat is worth assuming all is WORKING fine!!! Obviously, the seller at least knew the engine didn't work properly any more!

I'll say more like $6K with a cracked block assuming all else is in very good working order (that's a bold assumption for a 3 yr. old boat already ruined). Seems like a repower will be in the $5-6K range, maybe cheaper if you re-use (or sell) some of the marine parts from the ruined engine and do the work yourself.

Don't do it. You might as well pay the guy $13000 to take you out back and kick you in the balls...

Boats are cheap right now, poor economy, people can't afford to run them or pay for them.

I'm guessing that you are thinking about helping out a friend in need. If you really want to help him, tell him to file an insurance claim. You would be better off paying his deductable, getting the boat fixed, then taking over the payments. That is the only way I would get involved in this deal. Even then, you would be getting screwed hard. It would be one hell of a favor...
