I have a 1972. Merc. 110 9.8hp (s/n 3451128) which has lost all of the water pump impeller vanes. The impeller hub seems to be frozen on the drive shaft--any ideas on how to break this free? I have tried liquid wrench and taping on the hub with a center punch, however no joy.

Bout the only way is 2 flat screwdrivers one on each side.Use plastic under the blades if possible then pry up.Make sure you get all the old vanes out of the pickup tube.Jerry

Split the impeller off the shaft with a thin chisel. If you have an old screwdriver to sacrifice, sharpen to a chisel point and the thin blade will slice right thru the brass impeller hub like butter.

Use caution not to make the split in the area where the key sits (on the flat of the driveshaft). You'll drive the key down and ruin the pump insert needlessly.

Thats how I had to do it. You have to be accurate, but like emckelvy said it will split open no problem. Just use a sharp chisel.

Thanks guys-I sharpened an old screwdriver and was able to split the hub just as advertised! I could not tell where the key was, but fortunately picked a spot opposite the key to make the split.

Cool! Be sure to scrape the rust off the driveshaft where the impeller fits. Also test-fit the impeller, without key, to make sure it'll go in the pump without binding. Turn the impeller clockwise to "wind" it into the pump.

Here's a previous thread that'll cover questions you may have regarding reinstallation:
