Nauticus smart tabs... Broke them off today!

I've been trying a pair on my boat. They were great when we were wakeboarding and also the other day when out on the river / sound they did indeed make a big difference in ride. However... today was in a little rougher water... and brok BOTH of them off... Wasn't ramping waves or anything, but it was rough enough that we were bouncing around a good bit.

one is gone, the other was still hanging by the rear mount, but had broken free from the transom when I found it...

I had the sx 80 pound series and had them in the center hole.

Do people like lenco or Bennet better for regular full adjustable (and presumably much stronger) tabs?

I have seen a couple of posts with similiar comments on the sx tabs. Can't say I have seen any on their SS ones. Call Nauticus, they will take care of you.

Tim, can you tell us exactly where they broke, I also have the SX 80LB model on my 20' chap. and your story concerns me. You said one was still hanging from the transom, you mean like hanging from the shock? Did the tabs break off at the hinge point or at the actuator pins? Were you using the plastic hinge pins or steel ones? I can sorta see how a 4' or so wave like the ones we encounter all the time on Erie can really slam the boat hard and the tabs are plastic.... ultimately the jist of my questions are to figure out what went wrong so I know what to or what not to do with my set up, thanks.

Oh yea, is it possible someone could have used them as step plates to board the vessel when you weren't watching, and they broke before you even got into the water? just grasping at straws here.

Re: Nauticus smart tabs... Broke them off today!

I know they're good people and will stand behind their products from what I've read. What sucks is that now that I've swapped out the drive unit to a different gear ratio, I don't have any props that won't porpoise like crazy or hold an even speed at wakeboard speed until I get tabs on the boat... I'll most likely just buy the others because people in town carry them and I can get a set this afternoon or at worst in the morning. My daughter and I are on vacation this week with the plan being to wakeboard and ski until we can't take it any more... We made the decision to stay local and spend the travel budget on gas this year...

I do want people who read this to realize that we're running an 18 (17 1/2) foot boat with a stroked small block. During the time they broke, we were running mid 50's across the wide part of the river (wide as in miles) on a windy afternoon (shallow, wind = waves), and hit as high as mid 70's in a little flatter water. probably not the typical set of conditions encountered. I assume they would be fine in many situations... they were however indicated for performance boat use...

i don't think anything is built to handle those conditions. on the open market. moving that fast with adjustables, and adjusting, could really throw a wrench in the handling.

Actually, one of the reasons I liked the idea of the smart tabes is that it takes trying to adjust them at speed out of the equation.

The boat runs great at higher speeds without them - the porpoising problem with higher rake props is in the cruising speed ranges, and the other issue i was trying to correct was the fact that my hull likes to plane right about 16-18 mph... right where the kids need to be pulled on boards so it's about impossible to keep an even speed in that range because you're always either plaining out or falling off plane. With the tabs on i could hold an even speed all the way down to about 13...

I'm assuming that with a set of adjustables, i would be able to adjust them while towing boards and skiis and then find a sweet spot for high speeds that helps smooth out the chop a little / keep the bow down, but where they're not far enough down to worry about it doing anything screwy with the handling...

As I mentioned above, the boat feels really stable under conditions, it's heavy enough that it has never even come close to feeling like it's losing a lot of grip on the water or anything, but you do get bounced around a bit - nothing so unmanagable that skis and so forth are flying everywhere or anything like that... the two girls were sitting on the back seat laughing and catching a little spray that was coming over the top... I'm also probably driving more conservatively than it my sound, I'm really careful not to catch air without backing out of it, or even to have it under heavy throttle while going through big enough waves that would have the prop losing grip... I have a feeling that would mean certain, quick death for my alpha drive... The hull has plenty of v in the front to cut god size waves, but a pad in the back that lets it fly when you trim it out on calmer water... fastest in light chop of course...

I also see every weekend guys out there are running their boats a lot harder than I do mine...

say what you like about the set-up in our 80's vintage bowrider ski-boat, but it handles great doesn't do bad on fuel when you stay out of the secondaries. It also has a ton of power on call when you need it. Now that I've got the carb right, it'll idle down to 500 rpms as well... loads of fun. At one point yesterday up where the water is fairly calm, we were running in the lower 50's (highest I'll cruise for really long in order to keep drive temp down and about 3800 rpms) and overtook a nice looking scarab with twin drives. Crossed his wake, pulled along as if to pass him... When he hit the throttles, I casually rolled ours on, trimmed the drive up a little and we walked away with authority... :D

sorry so wordy, I type way too fast for my own good sometimes i think... either way, thanks for the comments...

You never mentioned what parts actually broke.

Guys . . . come on . . . adjustable tabs are on every v-hull offshore race boat . . . Once set for a particular speed, they do not need to be adjusted continually.

sorry... transom mounts are all still there. both shocks still attached, all 4 pins in the lower transom mounts still there, on the tab I have, the plastic that would be around the pin on the transom mount is broken and gone, on the other it broke the lower mounting bracket off the shock as well. I assume that the front end of the tabs themselves failed first, and then bouncing up and down off the water broke it lose from the shock mount. The weakest point is clearly the plastic around the pins on the tab itself.

Hope that answer what you need. I'll take pics a little later when i put new batteries in the camera...

and on adjusting at speed... I know on a smaller boat, handling will be more impacted with adjustments at speed, but in general, what he said above... I see a lot of Fountains, baja's, Scarabs, Formulas, Donzi's, etc... on the river.. all of the big power v-hulls have adjustable trim tabs...

Re: Nauticus smart tabs... Broke them off today!

I spoke with John at Nauticus this afternoon. As I expected and as others have indicated, he was straightforward to deal with. They're sending a set of the stainless ones that they use fo fast bass boats for me to try. It is likely that the plastic version could work with some of the upgtrades they've made to redistribute the stress, but I'm not in a typical situation and would prefer to be sure rather than screw around with something I will probably break again.

I want to stress that the product worked as advertised and did a great job making my boat plane out a good bit slower, probably added some stability in the mid range speeds and definately improved the ride in rougher water. There were no issues with handling up to 75mph (gps), but my impression is that the sx series will be just fine in the 50's and even 60's, but that once you start getting in the 70+ range they're less likely to hold up.

great product that should exceed your expectations in the vast majority of cases. If you're pushing a light, balsa cored hull with a stroked small block, I might go with the stainless version they make for bas boats... I see no reason why those shouldn't hold up to anything I could possibly do to them....

Re: Nauticus smart tabs... Broke them off today!

I lost my SX Tabs this past weekend as well. They were there when the marina launched my boat from dry storage. When I was exiting the marina (it is protected by 2 old barges that are about 50 ft apart), there was a much larger cruiser coming in (I could not see them due to the angle to the barges) well above no wake speed. I went from idle speed to full bore reverse and avoided the collision. The captain of the other boat apologized to the point that I was almost sick :).

Got back to the Marina later and I had no smart Tabs. I have the plates that are screwed into the transom and I have the actuators (pistons or whatever they are called) and that is it.

I am glad for this thread, I will be giving Nauticus a call soon. Hopefully I can have my Tabs back up and running soon. They were a great help, especially when I had 4 to 6 adults on board.

Quoting myself here but I sent an email to John and all of the parts I lost have been replaced with the upgraded version. Nauticus has customer service rivaling newegg.com (if you are a computer geek you understand this). Nauticus is a great company to deal with and John will take care of you......................

Re: Nauticus smart tabs... Broke them off today!

If you're gonna be flying across the water at upwards of 70 you might want to get those adjustable pivot mounts they have so you can lock them up to more or less turn 'em off in those circumstances... Just a thought anyway.

EDIT: The mounts I'm referring to are the ones that are intended to turn the tabs into trolling brakes, but if you mount them so the tab is in the normal position with them on the lower setting, when you flip them up, the tabs will be up out of the way... I know someone on here has done this, I watched the video last week. ;)

Tim;

I do not know if you have contacted us or not but it sounds as though you have not.

You have two choices, we can replace the broken or lost parts with some modifications (3/8" nylon bolts and nuts insted of the hinge pins, through bolt end fittings and 5/16" bolts for the actuaotrs, and anything else that is required), or you can upgrade the entire system to our MOBster Tabs (#MT1080-80) which were designed for High Performance Bass boats. The upgrade will cost about $75.00.

Please call 800-233-0194.

Re: Nauticus smart tabs... Broke them off today!

I posted it above July 1st when the thread was fairly fresh. I did get in touch and you / your folks were great. The stainless ones are on the boat and although I've been too busy with work over the last few weeks to really put the boat through the paces, they seem to work just fine so far. You were also kind enouhg to get them out quickly and overnight delivery for just the cost of postage to me. I have the others in a box to send back on the counter, but I just haven't gotten to getting them out yet...

Thanks both for the great service / interaction the first time and for checking to be sure this time around...
