I rebuilt both carbs and fuel pumps. Motor runs good but when I hold it wide open for a period of time I lose power. When it's losing power I can squeeze the ball and then the power comes back. It is starving for fuel. Any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks.

Re: 1984 50HP Mercury

You may have a bad check valve in the fuel bulb or other problems in your fuel system. Mercury has an upgraded primer bulb that's supposed to cure problems with sticking/restrictive check valves. You might try renewing the primer bulb and fuel lines and checking your tank for proper venting.

If you have a portable tank and hose assy that's known to be in good working order you might try that to see if the problem continues. If it does, there's still something going on with your motor's fuel system.

In that case, I'd pull the fuel pumps and check for debris lodged in the check valves or other obvious problems. Also it's not unusual for deteriorating fuel lines to cause a restriction so that's something else to look for.

HTH & let us know what you find.........ed
