Force 90hp Starting Issue

I have a 1996 Force 90hp outboard on my Bayliner Bowrider boat that is the same year. I am having trouble strating the motor constantly now. I had new plugs, wires, tune-up and some over things done at the end of last season. Now, when I go to start the boat, I starter motor will turn the fly wheel about a quater turn and then just stop. I have turned the fly wheel by hand and it does not seem to be a problem with the bearings. After trying a few more times to get it started I get the same results. I have plenty of battery power from both cells. The one thing I did notice was that the starter motor was extremly hot after I tried starting the engine a few times. Could this mean that the starter is going bad or could it be something different? Any advice you have is welcome. Thanks.

First thing do a compression test.Take plugs out and open throttle all the way and test each cylinder. It should be within 5-10 #s of each other.Jerry

Try cleaning and tightening all the electrical connections from the battery to the starter solenoid and the cable from the solenoid to the starter and see if that helps, you may have a loose connection or some corrosion build up on the cable ends. Also check to see that the bolts that mount the starter to the engine bracket are tight so that the starter is getting a good ground to the engine block. Good Luck!

Re: Force 90hp Starting Issue

ya i have already gone through all the checks from the ignition to the engine. all connections are reading with good voltage, all battery cables are brand new and have good clean connecitons; im still trying to understand why the starter motor becomes very hot and is unable to turn the fly wheel more then a quater turn.

Re: Force 90hp Starting Issue

Because the starter is shot. Seems that force starters have a high failure rate. Watch for ebay and you can probably find one for around a hundred bucks. What is happening is the windings or brushes are probably shorting to ground and it is like a short circuit and that is why it is getting hot. If you can find a place local like a auto parts store they might test the starter for you. You can try taking it apart but from time I have been on Iboats force starters don't rebuild so well. Another reason I think that force starters go bad is a starter is only designed to crank for a couple of seconds. When new boaters don't know how to start a motor they crank and crank. Excessive cranking is what kills a starter. If you only pulse it for two or three revolutions a motor that is operating correctly should start.

Re: Force 90hp Starting Issue

Hello,

I have a 97 Force 75 HP and I am on my fourth starter. I seem to change mine every two years. I am almost tempted to change it every spring to just be done with it. I had the OEM one rebuilt and it cost more than an aftermarket unit and did not last as long. Go to E-bay and look under Force-Mercury and you will we a lot of starters. This leaves me to believe that they go out often. They are about $90.00. This last time ( August 07) I put on a High Torque unit ( 120.00) and it seems to be doing well. However, I do not know if it is any better.

Like it has been said. Just bump the key a few times and if it does not start, let the starter cool for a while before restarting. New Plugs each year wil also help it restart more easier. Also, do not over choke it while starting and this will flood the engine and make it hard to start.

I hope this helps ,

Donald

Re: Force 90hp Starting Issue

thanks, i just got the old starter apart today and the guts of it were completely shot. two of the four bushing didnt even move and all the connecting wires were just throughly rusted out. new one coming in a couple of days, so i really think this was the problem. find out in a couple of days. thanks again for all the advice. hopefully this isnt a regular occurence. it was the original starter so 12 years isnt that bad :)
