I need to know if I can use this gear oil for my 1969 johnson 85hp hydroelectric lower unit. I have two 32oz brand new napa brand bottles from a friend but i'm worried about useing what he suggested so if anyone can give me a tip i would be much appriciated:D

Also, this is really a dumb question but about how many oz's will I have to put in and I'm told to put it in the lower hole until it will come out the top one but doesnt that defy the laws of physics, lol? How does it climb uppwards ? thanks!

yes, put in bottom hole and keep it sealed as you put it in, that pushes all the air outta the top hole

About the oil: OMC called it "Type C'. Then they changed it to "Premium blend" which is what you should be using.

Then NAPA / Sierra Marine comes along with their oil. The call theirs "Premium" for the 80-90 stuff and continue to call their "Type C"..."Type C". Anything to confuse us mortals.

So, you need "Type C" from NAPA/Sierra or "Premium Blend" from a dealer. I reccommend the dealer. I think it's better stuff.

You squeeze it in the bottom like runny toothpaste. Better yet, they sell a handy little pump that fits bottles. Reccommended, especially since a tube isn't enough and you will have to change tubes in midstream.

Thanks! Type C is what i read to use but that "premium" label got me thinking that might work so I appriciate your responses:D

A small pump huh? Sounds like that makes more sense but if I dont get one and just try squeezing it in while sealed wont it gush out when i remove the bottle and fumble to get the screw in?

you take both plugs out (you've done that to drain it anyway) then squeeze or pump the oil in though the bottom one until it starts to come out of the top one. Without removing the tube or pump you fit the top screw. Then remove it and quickly fit the bottom screw without fumbling!

Those pumps are sweeeeet!!!!!!! It's really the only way to go. Literally no mess when used. And the cost.......almost as sweet as actually using it. You can pick one up at Wally World for a little of nothing. You'll be glad you did.................................. ALAN

TSBoatman, don't worry about a little bit running out while getting that bottom screw back in, that leaves room for expansion. Make sure you use new seals behind those screws, otherwise, you may get some water intrusion.

Get the pump, it'll be the best $10 you'll ever spend.

Thanks guys I appriciate your responses but the two screws I have dont have any seals or even "o" rings on them so does my model take them? Can I just use thread sealer?

Last ones I got were .78 cents each. You need the seals Thread sealer won't seal them.;)

you need the seals, that is the #1 place for water intrusion. type "C" premium blend.

I really hate to beat this post to death but when you mean "seals" for the drain screws you do mean "o" rings right? Sorry for misunderstanding but any help is much appricaited, THANKS!:D

No they are not O rings. The parts list describes them as nylon washers.

They are just that, flat nylon washers with an OD that neatly fits in the hole under the head of the drain plug.

I don't think I would be happy to use O rings in place of them.

I have to admit to never having renewed mine in 24 years! One always comes out with the screw the other always stays behind.

I have promised the experts on here that at the next oil change I will renew them!

Thanks again Vic, thats the reason i asked because i didnt see any when i took it off so thats what got me worried. I'll double check if they are there and inspect them. Thanks again for being detailed on that post as that always answers the questions best for me;)
