I have an eska 15 hp o/b and can't attain spark. I have cleaned the magneto of rust as well as contacts inside flywheel. Ihave also cleaned all cotacts where ground is. Is it possible both coils are bad? This is driving me crazy.Aany help would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to get it running to take my son on his first fishing trip.

Re: ESKA 15hp No spark

Can't help without more information. We need at least the model number of your engine. Eska 15hp outboards had three different types of ignition systems, a plain magneto, plus two different solid state ignitions. The magneto ignition can be repaired fairly easily. The solid state ignitions, which are usually what goes bad...not so much. Parts are unavailable, and if you can find good ones, they cost more than the outboard is worth.

Does yours have points? If not, it's solid state. Does it have two coils mounted on the cylinder head? If so, it's solid state. Only the very early 15hp models had traditional magnetos with points and condensers.

You can go to www.certifiedpartscorp.com and call the number there with your model number in hand. They may be able to help you with parts for the standard magneto ignition.

There is hope, however. A guy who sells Eska stuff on ebay claims to have made replacements for some of the solid state components. If so, he'll be a hero to all of us who have a 2-cylinder water-cooled Eska in our garage, with no spark.

Good luck.

The model # is 14040A and has 2 coils mounted on the head. Any help as where to go would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Brian

Re: ESKA 15hp No spark

OK, yours is a 1977 model, and it does have the solid state ignition. Beyond making sure all connections are tight and clean, both at the coils and under the flywheel, there's not a lot you can do if it has no spark.

The exterior coils are available, but the stuff under the flywheel is not. What parts remained after Eska folded are long gone, and it's the most common failure on that outboard. I've been looking for two years for the stuff under the flywheel of my 9.9 hp version.

I know it's not good news, but according to the factory manual for that engine, there's not even a way to test the components. The manual says to "substitute known good parts" as the way to test.

It's sad, because it's kind of a nice, well-built little outboard.

Even the external coils or "tranformers" as Eska calls them, cost over $100 new, each--when you can find them.

Your very best bet, and it's not a good one, is to find another 15hp outboard that is in good running condition and keep yours as a parts donor. But...even if you do that, it's likely that the same components will fail. These are outboards that are over 30 years old, made by a company that is out of business, and not enough of them were sold to warrant a third-party re-engineering those faulty components.

My advice is to cut your losses and look for a Johnson or Evinrude 9.9 or 15 hp model. Parts are available for those, and will be for a long time.
