Trying to find a seal kit for a 1971 vintage power trim unit from a Merc 800.

Can't even find a p/n of the original units so don't know what to look for.

Any leads?

Thanks

Go on the Dougrussell.com site and look up the PTT units. You should find a seal kit.

BTW - The teflon piston seal requires a special tool to get the piston back into the cylinder.

What exactly is leaking? If it is around the trim rod, you can replace the oring without removing the piston from the cylinder (the inner steel cylinder pulls out of the aluminum trim cylinder), and the piston unbolts from the rod.

Re: 1971 Power Trim seal kit help

Thanks for the link to doug russell.

Not sure if there is a problem or not. This is a new to me unit that I will be installing but figured it would be best to replace the seals while its still on the bench. No idea on the history of this PTT. Kind of a preventative maintenance approach.

Am I waisting my time and money?

Explored the dougrussell site but could not find any power trim details or parts.

Anywhere else I could try?

Moody, Dougrueewll.com should have a listing. On my '77 Merc 1500 teh seal kit is listed under the PTT unit. Is it possible your motor did not come with PTT?

If the PTT unit will fit, it is likely you will find the seal kit somewhere.

Just a thought: if there's nothing wrong with the PT&T cylinder, don't mess with it! You're really opening up a can o' worms, especially if you've never worked on one before. Just getting the threaded cylinder cover loose can be a challenge if the motor's ever been in salt water.

I'd slap the unit on the motor and test it to see if it works and has any leaks before tearing into it. Heck, you can even hook up the pump, hoses, and cylinders prior to installation and run the pump to see if it all works.

The PT&T cylinders are normally quite reliable and unless demonstrating a problem, best left alone.

IMHO..............ed

After thinking it over I am going to follow your advice and install it as is. I don't need anymore on my plate right now.
