I had power problems the last two times I took the boat out. So, I took it to the mech. this morning. He listened to it and went hmm a few times, he ran a compression test on it. If looking from the back of the motor the top right cylinder had only 30 pounds of pressure. He told me $1800 - $2500 to fix. Enough I ain't got the money for that.

I am fairly handy and thought I have a worthless boat as it sits, so why don't I repair it. I pulled off the head over those two cylinders and found the problem. I had a blown head gasket. There did not seem to be any damage to the cylinder walls. There was some rust in the cylinder.

My question is where do I go from here. Do I just put a new gasket on and crank it up or what damage has this done?

Thanks for any suggestions

as you said you have nothing but money to loose, clean the rust, check the head for warp age, and give it a try. rust means water was getting in. it's just the price of a head gasket. there is only one way to know.

I replaced the gasket today and the engine seems to be running at a much steadier pace. Is there aything else I should check to make sure I am not causing the gasket to blow.

Thanks,

Warm it up, take a pressure reading for baseline and monitor.

Re-torque after a few hours of runtime.
