Need a 40or 50hp outboard for a 17' starcraft tri-hull, looking at a 2001 evenrude 50hp e tec, good or bad?

Re: suggestions for a new motor.

Is a 40 or 50hp going to be enough motor to push a loaded 17' fiberglass tri-hull? Surely that hull is rated for more than 50hp. A good rule of thumb is to put no less than 80% of the rated max on a hull. Much easier to back off the throttle than to add when there's none there.

Out of curiosity, were the E-tecs even made back in '01? I thought they came out just a couple years ago?

IMHO, I'd think a 70-85hp, would be better.
