How can I keep my carb/fuel line dirt free?

I recently bought a used 7.5 merc 2 stroke outboard. (year/model unknown).
It's in tiptop condition but I had a problem starting it when I brought it home... turns out that a piece of dirt got in the fuel line.

Now, I'm worried of getting dirt in there again because I have to remove the fuel line from the engine after each fishing trip, I feel like dirt could settle on the exposed fuel line 'ends' and I'll clog my carburetor again.

Any suggestions? I hate having to wrap up both ends every time, seems like overkill. I don't ever remember my Dad doing that with his engines. Or, am I safe to let them air out, and just brush them off with a cloth before I reattach them?

Thanks for any help.

You could hit it with a blast of office duster from your computer cleaning stuff. Actually, a quick inspection, and a puff of air from pursed lips would probably suffice.

hope it helps

been boating for 40 years and never had that happen. My stuff gets unplugged and left in the boat, then in the fall it gets hung in a shed, which we all know are not the cleanest of places. Give it a look and get rid of anything that looks suspect before you connect.

okay, thanks... that makes me feel better. It must have been a "freak" thing. I'll get a can of air too... great idea!
