Ok, my brother had given me our uncles boat a 1983 alumacraft with a 83' evinrude 35 hp console. Its been sitting since 2003, just pulled it home from storage and checked plugs, wires, hoses, etc. put new fuel in tank, turned motor over and the friggin thing fired on the 1st crank over AMAZING!

My question is, once I blew everything out and let it run a bit, its got two issues I can't figure out.

1. Its got this weird miss that sounds like a caschunk noise every so often, it does it for a split second drops rpms and then resumes normal idle. Tried adjusting idle knob above carb and only helps minimally, any suggestions on what this may be and how to fix it. It does not do this when applying the throttle, only at idle.

2. When i turn the ignition key off, the motor keeps running!!! I have to choke it at the front of the motor, with the key in off position to get it to kill. If I leave key on and choke it at motor the engine revs high. This one has me stumped too.

Please help, would like to get out on the water, but want to fix the idle issue and shut down issue.

Sounds like a lean sneeze due to dirty carb. Won't shut off, disconnect black-yellow wire to pak, touch wire from pak to ground, engine should shut off, if not, fauly pak. If it shuts off, check key switch. The two terminals marked M. should show continuity with the switch in the off position.

Re: 1983 Evinrude 35hp Please Help

I have the "keeps running" issue on my 1979 Evinrude 35hp electric start. I have replaced the switch and the power pak to no avail. I suspect a wire is broken or a connector is corroded or not seating properly.

Question: Should the black wire on the back of my key switch be constant ground or not? I was unable to find ground at the back of my switch.

The wiring diagram (Clymer manual) shows the black wire going to one of the ignition coils, but I don't understand the symbology at that point. It does not show a ground symbol.

When the next skier is ready to go, it's annoying to keep having grind on the starter to get it going after killing the engine on a full choke! (Yes I DO ski :D behind my 35! My 15' aluminum runabout allows sufficient power for pleasant skiing.)

RSTING: If you leave the switch in the ON position, you can choke the engine from the console. The electric choke only works with the key ON, but if the engine is warm enough to kill it by choking, the key position won't help it stay running. I should know - I've been doing this WAAAAAY too long. Hopefully, though, you have already solved your problem.

I have already installed a new switch. I tested both the old and new switches - both worked fine.

I woud like to know if either the black wire (going to the coil) or the black/yellow (going to the pak) is supposed to be a constant ground. I am not getting continuity between ground and either of the "M" lugs on my switch.

Ah haaa! (darn it!) I found the problem. The big connection from which the long cable to the switch originates has no contact for the black (to the coil) wire!!! The &%$# idiot who installed a new wiring harness on the engine about 7 years ago installed the wrong harness! The pin for the black wire has a rubber hole to nestle in on the other side of the plug! That marina is no longer is listed in the phone book - go figure!

Now I price a new (correct) wiring harness, then figure out how to fabricate the difference myself.

By the way, some 1979 Evinrudes had defective wiring harnesses in which the wiring was corroding from inside the insulation. The insulation was also very brittle after only 20 years, and would pop right off the wire if you touched it. I had that situation, which is why I had the wiring harness replaced in 2001.

I read elsewhere that sometimes, a pinhole - or bigger - in the fuel pump diaphram on certain engines can cause fuel to seep into the crankcase and cause low speed running problems that disappear at high speed, and that the symptoms seem ignition related, with overrun after power off etc.
