Hi Folks, I am on vacation and I noticed that my electric barrel type fuel pump is running all the time. Except for when I switch off the main battery switch. I do not remember it running all the time when the ignition is off and I am wondering if I have a bad relay or something else. Will letting it run for short periods of time burn up the pump.

It could be a stuck relay. disconnect the green wire off the back of the alternator. If the pump stops, it's not the relay. With a volt meter check for power on the alternator terminal you removed the green wire from. If you have power there, replace the alternator, or take it to a shop and get it repaired.

Thanks Don, I think the relay is ok since I can hear it click off and on when I unplug it. The alternator is super hot though and takes a while of running to get up to the 13-14 volts that I am used to seeing. Is this a repairable item on the alt or can I just replace it. Also I have been told that the alternator I have is a funky design and I might be better off with a newer design, any opinion on this. The one I have now only lasted around 40 hours.

Clicking relays does not mean the work.

I explained how to test if the alternator was bad. Did you check for power off the green terminal with the wire off and the engine not runniing?????

Also I have been told that the alternator I have is a funky design and I might be better off with a newer design, any opinion on this.
I sure didn't have to replace the OEM alternators very often. Not sure about your source, but if you can't find one that will operate your fuel pumps correctly, what do you plan on doing????

The one I have now only lasted around 40 hours.
And sitting around doing nothing but corroding for 12 years.

OK, so I started the boat up and when I disconnected the Green wire from the Alt the post on the alternator showed 8.7V. This was a constant with the keys off or on and the boat running or not. This alternator is only 2 years old, is this normal. Also, I probably already know the answer but can I use a car alternator or is the marine one special and what makes it special.

No, you can't use a car alternator. Take your alternater to a starter/alternator repair shop and have it repaired.
