Before I get started I want to apologize if I am posting in the wrong forum and also for my lack of the proper terminology. OK here goes.

I have a 1987 Four Winns Vista Cruiser 245, 350 engine with an OMC outdrive etc. We just bought this boat 5 weeks ago and while pulling the boat out of the water I noticed the outdrive was not going up and that I could not get the outdrive up at all. Fortunately we were able to get the boat on the trailer and out of the water. The mechanic at the marina later checked it out for me and informed me that the hydraulic line has pulled from the transom assembly and the complete transom asembly would need to be replaced.

Being the McGuiver my buddy and I are we felt we would be able to retap the hole, add a new fitting and then add a reducer and reattach the hydraulic line. Upon further examination the other 3 lines also appear to be on the verge of coming out, ( caused by salt water exposure at some point by a previous owner).

I have found several transom assemblies online including ebay for sale and found one for $225 however the person listing this says the transom assembly will fit a 4, 6 or 8 cylinder hook up. I emailed to question if indeed it would and he assures me it will. My question to you all is, is this actually possible that I could find this assembly and it will work on my boat. Any advice, ( other than junking the omc all together LOL ) would be great appreciated. Will check back later and try to answer any other questions. Thanks in advance

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!! Replacing OMC Transom Assembly

Howdy,

Well, I am of the "Swap it out and replace with a Mercruiser" Club! Since I did that. So I have one of those transom assy (and everything else) still sitting on the floor. I have checked OMC part numbers of my transom assy and transom plate along with a lot of other parts and yes, it appears that there's commonality for all of them. The drives are different (mine is a 1.43:1 ratio drive) because it was bolted to a 460. It would work well on any of the V-8's probably but would be way to "tall" (high gear ratio) for a 4 or a V-6. You could also put it behind any built up small block engine and it wouldn't break...The drive that went behind a 460 was pretty strong....My 1987 service manual indicates the SAME transom mount OMC part numbers (#984757 & #985198) for all the engines from the 2.3L 4cyl to the 5.7L V-8 The 7.5L (460) used 985070, 985199, 984760, and 985200 transom assys. differences (among others ) were whether it had power or mech steering and (in the case of the 7.5L) thru-hull/thru-prop exhaust. I would say you're ok getting just about ANY transom assy for any engine (except maybe the 7.5L assy and then I'm told it will fit too!) Of utmost importance (I think you know this, and why;)) try to find one from a fresh water boat! Of course Don will say all of this in 7 words! It takes me a paragraph!

Cheers,

Rick

Re: Help!!!!!!!!!! Replacing OMC Transom Assembly

Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You all have given me alot of info that will be a big help so I can get this thing fixed and back in the water. Other than this problem the boat is in mint condition and I seriously doubt the previous owners even knew the boat had been in salt water. They had it for a year and half and took her out 4 times and just decided she was too much boat for them. Oh and believe me if I had the 6 or 7 grand to convert to mercruiser or a volvo penta believe me I would. Maybe sometime down the road. Thanks again for all your help.
