trying to locate the year of Mercruiser

Last spring I had purchased a rebuild. I had an older engine (pre-1998) that was used in salt water by the previous owner. The new one is (supposed to be) 2001- ish 3.0L (HO <-what I was told but I don't know if this is the case). I just want to make sure I have the proper manual for my motor.

I have no complaints about this engine, it is running like a top, I just need to know that if I do need to do some repairs or maintenance I have the right book for the right engine. It is definitely a different "model", the throttle attachements are located on the top rather than over on the manifold side.

I believe this is the s/n (stamped on the block around where the GM stamp and "made in Mexico") down by the starter.

14097080

Thanks in advance!

Howdy,

the manual is determined more by the serial number of the engine not the year so much...

Take a look Here and compare models covered with your engine serial number.

Did I not provide the S/N?

The link you provided looks like I need to locate some letters somewhere around the distributor cap.

I guess I am interested in both model (for Seloc manual) and year for piece of mind.

Thanks!

If it's a Mercruiser, just above and aft of the starter is a metal plate rivited to the block. the Merc SN is stamped on that plate.

Re: trying to locate the year of Mercruiser

It's a Mercruiser as far as I know.

The number I provided is located back by the starter, where the GM stamp is.

It has Mercrusier on the manifold but that was brand new. It has a Mercruiser head cover but that is not new, also has a Mercarb and Mercruiser flame arrester. Oh yeah, and it's all black :)

The mechanic I got it through said it was a 3.0L HO (high output) but I have not been able to locate anything about that. The story I have is the engine was replaced in an insurance claim because it over heated and was subsequently rebuilt.

I'm starting to stress a little...what do I have???...I don't trust that the head cover is the same age as the engine so I guess the number I provided is something else? What is the number I did provide (located by the starter near the GM stamp and country of manufacture.)

Thanks

Is it a plate that is riveted to the block or is it stamped on the block? Is it flush with the block or does it face the bow on the collar.

The number I provided is stamped and is quite large, and is located in front (bow) and above the starter.

Here, I highlighted part of my other post so it's easier to see.
