I just bought a well used 1979 Bomber boat. I need to totally overhaul all the wiring to my switches (aerator, Bilge pump, fill pump, Nav lights). It has a ton of wires running everywhere... should I just clean everthing out and start from scratch or what? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am new to this site and to the entire boating scene really. Just wanting to see if anyone can help. Thanks in advance to all who throw in some advice

If you go back to the very top of this forum you will find a "sticky" titled "Generic Boat Wiring Diagram by Silvertip". That should help you with the wiring. If your existing wiring is brittle, cracked, and the terminations are corroded you would be wise to rewire.

If you are comfortable with wiring and the wiring is in question then by all means rewire. It has major advantages.
#1 You will know the system inside and out.
#2 Everything will be clean and secured.
#3 You can make your own wiring diagram as you go and no guess work should be involved if a situation ever comes up.

Just don't skimp on wiring colors. I save wiring from remote starts, engine and body harnesses for future use. If you have friends in the auto or similar field call in a favor. Red, Black, Blue can only go so far LOL

Go Slow and think ahead for access.
Good luck

so what you are telling me is this is going to be an arduous process. Thank you for the diagram. I will study it and use it. This should be fun and in the end... at least I know I did it. Any more help would be appreciated

Re: 1979 Bomber Boat Wiring issue

I'm afraid you got as much help as you can get unless someone has the same exact boat (possible) and happens to have a diagram (very unlikely). Wiring a boat is not rocket science and just requires looking at some diagrams, like the one I referenced so you understand the concept. From there its develop a plan and execute it. Plan - Build just like any other project. There aren't many choices. You can do it yourself, have someone else do it, or deal with what you have.
