Evinrude 115hp, temp falling...climbing..

I need some advice from some of you who have expertise with heating issues. I have an 115hp engine that, when at an idle the temperature climbs. When it's throttled up, the temp decreases. Often times the alarm will sound if idling too long. To me, it sounds like possible impeller, or maybe thermostat, corrision/blockage issues. Any advice on where to start?

Sure, how long's it been since the water pump was service, the thermostats changed? If it's been a while, time has probably come now. While you're at it, change with a complete kit (impeller, ss cup/liner, and all soft parts. If you're not up to it, have a dealer do it. In clean water, 300 hours is what I consider max for water pump life, less in sediment bearing water (bays, dirty rivers, etc.).

Jim,
Thanks for your reply. I will have to check on the status on all those parts. Didn't really want to get that deep into it, but if I don't nip this, I'd be looking at a serious problem, or shopping for a new outboard! Never thought about the sediment issue, but anything abrasive can wear much faster. Being in the Delaware bay area, there is plenty of run off and brown water. Thanks,

The water pump provides cooling at idle. If the thermostats are defective, impeller is weak, or the holes in the thermostat valve body are plugged it will overheat at idle. At planing speeds extra high pressure water is forced through the system, causing the thermostat pressure relief valves to open. This extra water volume provides extra cooling to the powerhead. I'd follow Wilde's advice and replace the impeller and service the thermostat housing components.

you don't say what year. but being in salt water, do the water pump and tstat service. if you don't know or don't remember, when they were done. it is time to do them. cheap insurance.
