I just picked up a good running 283 chevy SB I would like to marinize it and put it in place of my now 165 250L-6 The bellhousing bolt pattern is the same. I'm not sure about the flywheel size though? And I'll need a y-exhaust to bolt up to my MC-1 transom plate. The other thing is will any GM small block exh. manifolds fit it? And will my drive with the 1.65:1 ratio be ok with the 283 or will i need another ratio? Thanks, any input about this swap will be appreciated. :D

Re: Future Eng. Swap

Note: I was going to go with a 292 L-6 for a little more oomph but with the long stroke i was told it's a low rpm engine. So i think i'd do better with the 283 SB, a good gm motor. The 283 is 185hp w/2brrl and 220 hp with a 4 brrl. The rathio chart says to use a 1.65:1 for the 200 hp 305 so i'm thinking my drive should be ok?

Bump ^^^^^ this got buried and I am sure there are those here that can help. Good luck, the ratio sounds right to me.

Everything that fits a 305/350 should fit that 283. I'm not sure about the motor mounts though. Your ratio will probably be ok since you have a smaller displacement motor.

Re: Future Eng. Swap

Your right QC, i thought a few more Ole GM guys would jump on this being the 283 sb is rare and like the chevy legend engine. :D The block looks like the front mount may fit i havent mached it up yet. A front mount can be fabricated anyway. I put a bellhousing up to it and it hit the flywheel but the bellhousing may be a MC 4 cyl housing I'm thinking the 6-8cyl have the same and the 4cyl was a smaller flywheel. Thanks QC/glastron;)
